Happy Holidays!
Someone on my holiday list is getting chickens
for Christmas. The recipient doesn't live on a farm,
won't ever enjoy a 'home-made' omelet and, in fact,
will never see their flock. Instead, their chicks
will be sent to to a small corner of the world where
they will forever change someone else's life by
providing a sustainable source of food and income to
a struggling family. See, chicks grow into chickens,
which lay eggs and, yes, can become dinner. For a
family who has only ever known hunger and poverty
they become a constant stream of protein and
income! And because chickens make more chickens,
the gift continues to grow as offspring are passed
along to effect the same change in other people's
lives. Grass huts become adobe. Wells are dug.
Malnourished children become better fed. Medical
care
can now be had. Attending school
becomes more than a dream. All this from a
flock of chicks you 'gave' as a twenty dollar Christmas
present-
maybe to a hard to buy for grandparent, the teenager
who has everything, friends who want for nothing or
a very special person who deserves an extra
special gift. Imagine them going to bed every night
thinking about those chickens they'll never see...
wondering what the recipient family in Thailand,
Honduras or Cameroon is doing now because of
those birds... how the chickens must be growing- one
hen can lay 200 eggs a year!!... and the many, many
ways their lives have been changed.... a gift from the
Heifer Project International is truly a gift that keeps on
giving to everyone involved... and that is the true spirit
of Christmas.

Between the Lines
Reading Recommendations from the Cottage Shelves
Just in time for holiday reading, Piero Ferrucci's
The
Power of Kindness: The Unexpected Benefits of
Leading a Compassionate Life is steadily gaining
fans. Maybe it will remind people that it is the kindest
people who thrive, help others to do so and can turn
our world around. On my wish list is the just released
Listening is an Act of Love edited by Dave
Isay. This is
a collection of the most remarkable stories to
come out of the Storycorps Project (often featured on
NPR). I love listening to these 'driveway moments' and
am glad the
collection can be had on CD as well! Dave Barry and
Ridley Pearson have come out with the conclusion to
their Peter and the Starcatcher's trilogy, Peter and
the
Secret of Rundoon. This series is a sort of
prequel to E.M. Barrie's Peter Pan and has been a big
hit with kids. Duck's Cottage Reading Group
will be enjoying
a discussion of Garlic and Sapphires this
month. This collection of essays by NY Times food
critic Ruth is entertaining, funny and everyone I know
has loved it.
We're also going to do a book 'dirty santa' - everyone
brings a book (new or used)
along with the story behind why they chose it. Should
be fun... Oprah's latest pick is definitely on my reading
list. Ken Follett's The Pillars of the Earth is a
contemporary heavyweight classic (literally, it weighs
2.5 pounds) that was described by Publisher's Weekly
in 1989 as thus 'with this book, Follett risks all and
comes out a clear winner... a historical novel of
gripping readability...and memorable characterization.'
Set in 12th century England, Pillars concerns itself
with the building of a great cathedral, the numerous
parties involved in the undertaking, and a mystery that
provides suspense and tension. I can't WAIT to read it
and am going to make it my holiday travels book.
(Follett's long awaited sequel to the book, World
Without End, just came out in October.) I've
just finished the suggestion list from which our
reading group will make their next selections. I try to
read the first few chapters of books during this review
process and found the following books very hard to
put down (so I hope the group will choose them!)-
Evening by Susan Minot, The Almost
Moon, Alice Sebold's long awaited sophomore
novel, and Terrorist by John Updike. Chris
passed along a book he enjoyed, Greywalker,
by Kat Richardson. The eerie story of PI Harper Blaine
who, after a very close brush with death, is now aware
of the parallel world of spirits surrounding her modern
day life. An unusual foray for me, but pretty interesting!
My holiday wishes for all my readers is that
Christmas morning will find Duck's Cottage coffee in
your stocking and plenty of books under the tree!
(To guarantee Holiday delivery, please place all coffee
orders by Dec. 9th!)

it's not too late to get in the holiday spirit- the Outer
Banks Music Showcase Christmas show has
dates
scheduled through 12/27 and a New Year's
Eve
Comedy show is planned... on the fifth day after
Christmas (12/29) enjoy an Elizabethan
Christmas at
Festival Park in Manteo... and no true Outer Banker's
Christmas is complete without a trip to the Poulos

have been decorating their home and yard for
over 22 years and in 2005 they were the top vote-getter
in the Today Show's Al Be Home For Christmas

from Al Roker and a feature on the morning breakfast
show... their lights are up, they stay decorated through
New
Year's and they welcome everyone to come and enjoy
the view! Merry Christmas, everyone!

Charlie & Sarah
My Mini-Me's
I constantly turn to my kids for all sorts of material-
whether it's stories detailing their latest exploits that
keep my water aerobics class entertained or good
recommendations from the children and young adult
shelves, they are an endless source of smiles, quips,
quotes and queries. Charlie turns 13 on January
1st (yes, a New Year's baby!) and is in 7th
grade at First Flight Middle School. Charlie plays
football and baseball, stays in the water on his
body board through Thanksgiving and plays a mean
trumpet. Charlie loves to read almost as
much as I do (for which I share credit with Heron Pond
Montessori school in Kitty Hawk) and has hit the age
where we are starting to read the same things! This
acumen tapped him for the Duke TIP program
(which is why he just took the SAT's). Charlie's favorite
book is Into Thin Air (John Krakauer) and he
is currently working on Gordon Korman's Island
and Everest series. Don't be
surprised if I soon give him his own column!
My daughter, clone and shopping buddy, Sarah,
just turned 9 and will be putting Oscars, Emmys
and Tonys on the mantlepiece. She is in fourth
grade at Kitty Hawk Elementary School where she
sings with the Chorus; she also sings with the Outer
Banks Concert Chorale's Children's Treble Choir and
was quite impressive at their recent concert. She
takes ballet, tap and jazz at Island Dance and is
mesmerizing onstage! Sarah loves
going to shows in Norfolk and is a big fan of movie
musicals- including Grease, Hairspray, Bye Bye
Birdie, West Side Story, Dreamgirls and more. Sarah
has recently discoverd the delight of reading for
pleasure (finally!) and is quickly making up for lost
time! Her favorite book is The Invention of Hugo
Cabret and she is currently reading Harry
Potter and the Goblet of Fire. My favorite
presents under the tree each and every year are
always the same- my kids.
Help the world's children- make a Christmas gift to Unicef!

Jamie's Five and Dime
Top Ten Outer Banks (and Beach) Books
Gift from the Sea, Anne Morrow Lindbergh
This is a beach classic. Lindbergh's
musings on the life of women, the many directions we
are pulled in, the lack of space we give ourselves and
the need to spend more time nurturing our souls is
insightful and amazing given that she was writing in
the 1950's. Pure Sea Glass, Richard LaMotte
& Celia Pearson The penultimate (and
exquisite) book on collecting, identifying and locating
beach glass. Tied for number one at Duck's Cottage
for over three years, notecards, a journal and guest
book are also now available. Duck: An Outer
Banks Village, Judith Mercier The
quintessential history of the town of Duck It
Happened on the Outer Banks, Molly Harrison
Interesting collection of essays detailing 26
historical events that took place on the Outer Banks
including better known stories like the Wright Brothers
and lesser known like the Ship That Hit the Span.
An Outer Banks Reader, David Stick, ed.
My number one recommendation when
asked for a book about the Outer Banks. Stick has
compiled a wonderful collection of essays beginning
with explorer's accounts from the 1500's and covering
all subject matters relating to life on, and of, these
Barrier Islands. Taffy of Torpedo Junction,
Nell
Wise Wechter A timeless, childhood favorite.
I
wanted to be Taffy, a little girl growing up in Hatteras
during WWII who, with her pony and dog in tow,
encounters spies and Uboats in her own backyard. I
begged to change my name to Taffy, have read this
book to my children and STILL want to be that little
Hatteras girl! Mystery at Kill Devil Hills, Carole
Marsh Part of the Carole Marsh 'Real Kids'
series featuring a pair of siblings who travel
extensively with their grandparents, consistently
stumbling upon mysteries! This one takes place here
during the 100th Anniversary of Flight.
Mustangs on the Beach, Sandy Waugaman
Covers the history of the wild horses of the
Currituck Outer Banks including what's happening
with them today. A fundraiser for the Carova Volunteer
Fire Department up in 4 Wheel Drive country.
Outer Banks Edge: A Photographic Portfolio,
Steve Alterman Gorgeous coffeetable book
featuring the amazing photography of Steve Alterman,
full time lawyer/part time photographer, year round
Outer Banks lover. Tied with Pure Sea Glass for our
#1 spot. The Outer Banks in Vintage
Postcards, Chris Kidder I'm a sucker for
history and the collection of old photos of the area in
this book is outstanding. I could look at it over and
over again.
These Outer Banks books now available on our website!
