Organising your wardrobe

Is your wardrobe/closet a mess? Do feel like you have nothing to wear, despite having lots of clothes? It's a good idea to set aside some time to go through your wardrobe and organise your clothes at least twice a year. The end result is more space, less clutter and a more manageable wardrobe.  Here's the steps to an organised wardrobe:

1. Take all your clothes and place them on the bed or somewhere else convenient- you'll probably be surprised by how much you've got!

2.  Go through each item and ask yourself some important questions:
- Will I ever wear this?
- Does it even fit me?
- Have I worn it in the past year?
- Is it free of stains and tears?
- Do I like it?

If the answer is no, then you need to let go of it. You should feel comfortable and attractive in every item that you decide to keep, if an item just isn't working for you then it has to go.
3.  You'll need to sort your clothes into a few different piles:
- Keepers: clothes that are going back into the wardrobe, things that you wear often, look good on you and are ready to wear.
- Charity: clothes that you can give away to friends or charity shops.  They must be in good condition, if not, they are throwaways.
- Sell/ return: clothes that still have the tags attached and can be returned or exchanged and clothes that are of a particular quality that can be sold online or to a consignment store.
- Throwaways: items that are worn out, stained or just plain hideous.

4. Once you  have completed steps 1-3, here are some simple tips for organising your wardrobe:
- Group like items together.
- Jeans and skirts can either be hung up or folded and placed on shelves.
- Jumpers/sweaters should never be hung less they become misshapen.
- T-shirts can be folded and placed in drawers or on shelves.
- Don't use wire hangers, they can corrode in humid environments and ruin clothes.
- Protect dresses and suits by hanging them in canvas bags. Plastic dry-cleaning bags hold the chemicals in which is bad for your health and causes the clothing to discolour.  Take the bags off as soon as you get your dry-cleaning home, hang outdoors if possible, to allow the chemicals to release.
- Scarves can be placed in a drawer or hung on a scarf hanger.
- Use drawer organisers to arrange your socks and underwear.
- Shoes can be stored on the floor, on shoe shelves or in canvas pockets that hang on the back of a door.
- There are many different ways to store jewellery- one simple thing to do is use Scotch 3M hooks on the back of a door or inside the wardrobe/closet to hang necklaces on.
- Use clear plastic containers to store out of season clothing.  Include cedar balls in the containers.
- Label the ends of your shelves so you can put items away easier.  If you have a housekeeper who speaks another language, put the labels in their language as well.
- If you are based in Sydney or another humid area, consider using Damp Rid to protect your clothes from moisture and prevent mould.

5. There are so many products available that will help you organize your wardrobe better. Target, Kmart and dollar stores are great places to find simple items and Howards Storage World in Australia and The Container Store in the USA have many products for organising specific items. Take a look at our shop for organising products.

6. Don't forget to bring the donations to the charity drop off!

5 Steps to Successful Style

by Jeff Lack

See Jeff's complete article here.  Highlights follow:

Step 1. Find or create a style you like.

Style is the unique way we wear clothing and accessories to balance our colours and body shape. It's a representation of our personality based on what we wear and how we wear it.  And it is important to remember that there is nothing wrong with turning to tried and tested styles that are timeless. That can also help to make your dollar go further as you will see in step 3.

Step 2. Put your signature to it and make it YOURS

Style is your personality on show through your look, so make it 'you' nique!  It can be something as simple as how many buttons you have done up or undone, how your collar sits, whether the shirt is tucked in or not, or half in and half out.

If we took five people at random and put them in the same basic outfit and then worked their individuality into the look with accessories that suit their personalities they would all look very different from each other at the end of it.

Step 3. Wardrobe staples

These are the basics that will create the backbone to your individual style. Initially you must understand your fit and the appropriate colours that suit you best. Our personal colours, skin, eyes and hair, tend to stay the same however our fit or body shape, unfortunately for most of us, does not.

Personally, I am big on age appropriate. We have all heard of 'mutton dressed as lamb', so dressing in your age bracket will ensure you have style when it counts.  Many people hoard, hoping that a piece of clothing which holds great memories from a moment in their past will come back into fashion ...one day. Some women may romanticize about the shape they were when those size 8 jeans fitted like a glove and men are shockers at failing to cull wardrobes and throw away things that are long since worn out and ill fitting. The saggy, baggy jeans are a tell tale sign guys!

Step 4. Accessories

Simple outfits shine with the right combination of accessories. Footwear is classed as an accessory and I believe you should start at your feet and build up from there. Your feet have to make an impression as they are the first part of your stylish look people will notice. Clean, well fitting shoes that ooze your personality may be the only thing to set you apart in the corporate arena where strict dress codes limit your ability to stand out.  Think of occasions where you have noticed someone's shoes at a business meeting and that should make you realize the importance of the humble shoe.

Step 5. Use your illusion

Once your clothing fits, the colours suit and the accessories diffuse your lines; wear your style with confidence! Have fun with your clothes, don't try too hard. Style must be effortless. Once you are dressed, check the mirror, strap on your ATTITUDE and enjoy who you are. Successful style is using these tips and being true to yourself, so go get em tiger!

A Little Elf Can Help!

Dear A Little Elf,

How does one organize pots and pans? Also plastic containers with lids.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

JoEllen, NY

Hi JoEllen,

Pots and pans can be set/stacked inside each other or the pots can be hung on a ceiling pot rack.  In small kitchens people will often store them in the oven, although you need to take them all out to cook.  If you have a big cabinet, you can add metal racks inside to add shelves and separate the items more.

Plastic containers can be set/stacked inside each other, then either use a bigger plastic container for all of the lids, or you can get a lid holder at a store like Bed Bath and Beyond or Howard's Storage World that attaches to the inside of the cabinet door.  You can even use a big Ziploc bag for all of the lids.

All the best,

A Little Elf
