On Friday, November 7, 2008 Imagine a School... Summerhill had its debut festival screening at this year's Asheville Film Festival in Asheville, N.C. (Nov. 6-9, 2008).

The feature documentary was filmed in England over a period of seven years. The film follows four students from the ages of eleven to sixteen as they grow up and make important decisions about life and their education at the same time that they become involved in the legal and political fight to save their school.

Film News And Views
Before the festival runs, JS Media pitched Imagine a School...Summerhill to film writer Erik Sean McGiven, who gave the feature documentary a double thumbs up at the online film magazine Film News and Views:

"The filmmaker's valiant efforts bring to light this innovative teaching philosophy and the perils should it be snuffed out. Imagine a School...Summerhill is a film that challenges one's thinking on education and government's role in regulating it. This film illuminates alternatives as well as hope for the future."

Small Charities, Big Help

Small Charities, Big Help is a project of JS Media News & Views that lets you know about some great nonprofit organizations that are small but mighty. Whatever you can do for these folks would be much appreciated.

Hollywood Media Arts
I'm psyched about this month's organization as they are literally in my backyard. Located in the middle of Hollywood, this nonprofit was started only two years ago by Dylan Kendall, a very caring ceramist who wanted to reach out to at-risk youth with the arts. Here's how they describe themselves:  "Hollywood Media+Arts is a one-of-a-kind arts academy for homeless and foster care young people...The Center offers classes in media, music and the commercial arts--giving young people a chance to learn about a variety of creative activities, sharpen their thinking skills and prepare them for jobs in the creative industries."

They can use all kinds of volunteers and, of course, donations:  www.hollywood-arts.org
