Home Sweet Home Care Newsletter - December 2011

Dear friends, clients and associates,
The last week of December always seems to be the busiest week of the year filled, as it usually is, with last-minute shopping, travelling, parties, cleaning, organizing, event planning and more. Those of us who are business owners and managers most often get to the holidays exhausted because we have to repeat these activities for our businesses as well as manage a ton of details, such as bill collection, performance evaluations, accounting reconciliations, etc., before the year's end.
And those of us with kids and families, including seniors who need in-home help and support should also be acknowledged and saluted for getting through the holiday season in one piece, and for quite a few, in great form and style. You guys rock, so give yourselves a big hug and a pat on the back. Lastly, there are the single people, who I suspect are having the most fun, enjoying the carefree life during the run-up to Christmas, Hanukkah and the New Year, but I could be wrong.
Anyway, we couldn't have you go off on your much-deserved holiday vacation without leaving you with the final edition of this newsletter for the year 2011. There are lots of worthwhile things to review in it when you get a chance along the way to read it online on your laptops, ipads or smartphones. We hope and trust that you'll find it informative, useful and, yes, even inspiring, as I did when I read the story about our Senior-of-the-Month, Charles Feeney (the story about whom is featured directly below). Mr. Feeney tried to anonymously give $350 million to Cornell University and donated $125 million to U.C.S.F. for a new medical center while he himself lives modestly, flying coach, wearing a $15 watch and not even owning his own home or car!!
From all of us at Home Sweet Home Care in San Francisco and Redwood City, thank you so much for your continued support and confidence. We wish you all a very happy holiday, full of love and many blessings.
Shirley Cohen

Meet Charles Feeney, Cornell's $350 Million Donor The New York Times has unmasked 80-year-old Cornell alum Charles F. Feeney as the anonymous donor who gave the school a $350 million donation to construct a new technology-based satellite campus on Roosevelt Island in New York City. Officials at The Atlantic Philanthropies, the foundation started by Feeney in 1982, confirmed to the paper last night that he was the one who made the gift for the project, which is expected to generate an extra $1.4 billion in tax revenue for the city, plus 20,000 construction jobs and as many as 30,000 new jobs once the facility is up and running.

Treating High Blood Pressure May Add Years to Your Life

People suffering from high blood pressure, or hypertension, who keep their blood pressure levels under control may add years to their life, a new study suggests. In fact, those in the study who took medicine to lower their blood pressure for more than four years reduced their risk of dying from cardiovascular disease over a 20-year period, the researchers found.

10 Misconceptions About Long-Term Care Insurance
Long-term care insurance is complicated, costly and unnecessary. I'm healthy! I have family who will care for me, and I refuse to go into a nursing home, anyway. Medicare and Medicaid will cover care once I need it - why waste money on insurance?

The Real Fountain of Youth: Exercise
Well, folks, it's happening. The baby boomers, popularizers of tennis and skiing in the 1970s, inventors of jogging and step aerobics in the 1980s, are advancing through middle age to the very threshold of senior citizenship: The oldest boomers turn 65 this year.
