September 29, 2010
Happy Fall greetings to you all,
The summer of 2010 is now officially over. It seemed so short-lived, didn't it? Probably that's because we had so few warm, sunny days back-to-back. Hopefully, we'll have a nice Indian summer in the weeks ahead to cheer us up and let us savor each and every day before winter begins.
We have lots of articles of likely interest to seniors and their families (as well as eldercare professionals) on our Twitter page so I want to encourage everyone to check it out. There are always so many new developments in our field from important breakthroughs in medical research to current events which affect the lives of our seniors. And then there are often great stories that we come across about seniors to share with you, which we believe you'll find as inspiring as we do. I know how hard it is to find the time to keep up with all the information that's out there, so I trust you'll find our compilation a useful one.
Whether it's inspiration you need or a sense of hope for the future for seniors, you'll find it in this month's newsletter. We've also included stories that are a bit concerning, like the recent article about the "Death of Medical Privacy" and the fact that new research, published in the British Medical Journal, says that glucosamine and chondroitin or the combination of both supplements, do not significantly influence the course of pain or the impact joint space narrowing as we have been led to believe they did. Well, thank goodness for medical research. Otherwise we would be stuck ingesting things we think are good for us but which turn out to have very little, if any, effect at all.
The theme of this month's newsletter can probably be best summed up by three old expressions: Live and Learn (enjoy the benefits of new research information), Plan Ahead (like our world's oldest man does), and Keep Active (both physically and mentally).

The Death of Medical Privacy
Serious concerns are surfacing recently over the gutting of patients' right to the privacy of their medical records under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (PPACA), aka ObamaCare. Dr. Arie Friedman, a pediatrician practicing in Northern Illinois, wrote an eye-opening piece last week about this important subject for the American Thinker, a popular daily internet publication in which he highlights the specific sections of the bill which will likely undermine and compromise patients' privacy rights. To read the article in its entirety, click on the following (Dr. Friedman's article).
