Tip of the Week:
Taking it to the Next Level:
Continuing to Grow as a Team
Commonly once a team is put in place, after the Foundational Training (formerly called the "Five Day Training"), teams want to continue to develop skills. Thank heavens! The worst thing we can do is have a plan and put a team in place and then let things slide. Crisis response teams ("Flight Teams") have to be a living organism, continuing to share lessons learned and improve skills and plans.
Typically, regions or districts do the "full enchilada" training every two or three year, and in between, bolster the team skill level with one- or two-day trainings on more specialized issues such as trauma, catastrophic events (those that unfold on campus putting lives at risk during the school day), administrative training on managing media during crises, bullying, threat assessment and others.
The good news for those who are ready to do (or re-offer) the Foundational Training is that we're now uploading much of the content into online courses, so we no longer need to have five days of on-site training in order for people to still receive the entire training. We know that principals are reluctant to have folks out of the building, so we're working toward having all of the content online, and only the skill-building on-site.
We also have video-conferencing as an option for short trainings and for the absolute "best buy" in keeping your team moving forward.
Remember, too, that the CMI website has free downloadable handouts that cover specific areas related to crisis, trauma, grief, etc. You are welcome to make as many copies as you like, as long as you leave the copyright information at the bottom. These are great starting points for quick update staff inservicing ideas that can be squeezed into a few minutes at a regularly held staff meeting.
Every year do something to keep your team growing...
