JULY 29 - AUGUST 2, 2012

BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, USA

During our initial planning for the ICJSE we were  frequently asked, "How many people do you hope will attend?"  Our answer was, and continues to be, that we hope the first ever ICJSE creates a solid foundation for the network's continued collaborative efforts and that as many members as possible join us in Boston.  Currently, we have over 275 participants preregistered for the ICJSE.  Exemplifying the broad diversity of our network, these participants come from over 215 institutions and represent 50 different countries.

Begin to imagine our time together... conversations across borders, creation of partnerships that allow students to explore the world, sharing of practices, models, successes and challenges from a network wonderfully rich with diversity, yet bonded together by a common mission.  We know our experience together this summer will be invaluable, however, the proactive steps that we take after the Colloquium will truly define our commitment as a global network - please plan to join us!

The World is Our House: Mission
Our Mission in a New Context

Fr. Adolfo Nicolas, SJ begins his letter of support for the ICJSE emphasizing that "the enormous challenges to Jesuit Education today require our best efforts in order for us to serve the mission that has been entrusted to us."  We all know that the ultimate reason for our schools is to better serve the mission today.  We also know that if we work together as a network, the possibilities of better serving our mission will increase.  We have an extraordinary potential "as an international and multicultural body" (GC 35, Decree 3, # 43), potential that can be developed if we focus on our mission together.  It is no wonder our last congregation challenged us by highlighting that "in this global world marked by such profound changes, we now want to deepen our understanding of the call to serve faith, promote justice, and dialogue with cultures and other religions in the light of the apostolic mandate to establish right relationships with God, with one another, and with creation" (GC 35, Decree 3, # 12).

The ICJSE provides us with the forum we need to creatively respond to this new context and continue addressing with new vigor the challenges that we face in serving our mission: Justice, Faith, Dialogue with Others and Caring for Creation.  Together, as an international body, we can find innovative ways that cannot be otherwise discovered or created.  We have been invited to begin a new way of proceeding, a new way to see ourselves and to respond to our mission.

Our Network in Action

Consider this....on a recent exchange program to Belvedere College in Dublin, Ireland, a student from Boston College High School participated in a service project that profoundly impacted him.  Inspired and motivated, this student returned to BC High and insisted that such a program be implemented in his community. The result: an ongoing outreach program with Boston's homeless.  However, the story does not end there.  Just a few weeks ago, a group of dedicated young men from Colegio del Salvador in Buenos Aires, Argentina participated in this very same outreach program as part of their exchange experience with BC High.  An idea from Belvedere College quickly impacted students, families and communities from three different continents - all through the power of our Jesuit network.

February Highlight: Ignacianos por Haiti

A humanitarian campaign pioneered by FLACSI...

Haiti is a country in need of outside support to prosper.  With a literacy rate of only 52.9%, education is one important and definitive way to help.  Seven years ago the Jesuits created a small network of schools called Foi et Joie Haiti (Fe y Alegra Haiti) designed to strengthen education and social improvement in that country.  In 2011, with their strong commitment to social justice and faith, Jesuit schools united to continue to support the important education movement in Haiti.  Ignacionos por Haiti was born.  Fifty three FLACSI schools, along with other Jesuit institutions, created this three year humanitarian campaign to strengthen the mission of the Jesuit-Haitian partnership.  The main goal is to build more schools, better educate teachers, develop economic funds and grant better schooling opportunities.  JSEA and JECSE have committed to joining the campaign.  Ignatian schools from around the world are invited to gather resources and contribute.  Imagine, one global network joining hands to so powerfully impact a community in need.  This is what God has asked us to do. This is the true power of our network.  For more information, please visit www.ignacianosporhaiti.org.

Examples of our network in action currently exist all over the world - the Jesuit Schools European Sports Tournament (JeSET) involving 23 schools from nine European countries, Hungarian and Danish educators exploring how new teachers are trained in France, the twinning relationships between schools in Africa and Europe, the Student Ignatian Leadership Conference in Manila, Philippines, and so much more!  We have only begun to explore the ways in which our Jesuit roots can provide opportunities for students, teachers and families at the global level and the results have already been transformative.  What collaborative efforts are you a part of?  Share them today on Facebook as we will continue to highlight some of these projects in our coming newsletters!

Travel Planning

Applying for Your Visa

If you require a Visa to travel to the United States, please make plans to apply immediately!  The process can often be long and tedious, and we do not want you to be unable to attend because of delays in the visa process.  We have registered the ICJSE on the Department of State's Listing of Upcoming Conferences in the U.S. which is distributed to U.S. Embassies and Consulates worldwide.  We have also engaged Congressman Stephen F. Lynch representing the 9th District of Massachusetts.  He has generously provided a Letter of Support for the ICJSE.  The Congressman's office will also be contacting all consulates that our participants will be in touch with to endorse the Colloquium and encourage approval of visas.  Please do not delay in beginning this all important process!  For more detailed information about applying for a visa, please visit our webpage about Traveling to the U.S.

Travel Arrangements

We are pleased to announce that the ICJSE has partnered with Colpitts World Travel Limited of Edinburgh, Scotland to assist our guests with travel arrangements.  Colpitts Travel is an agency experienced with international travel and the visa process.  While guests are responsible for applying for their own visa and for making their own travel arrangements, Colpitts is available to help.  This international travel agency can book your flights and offer guidance through the visa process.  You may contact Colpitts Travel at [email protected].

Call for Workshop Presenters

Thank you to all those who have made proposals and suggestions for speakers and workshops at the ICJSE.  We continue to invite proposals for workshop presentations based on our Colloquium themes.  We are seeking presentations that will advance our conference goals and promote rich, constructive and collegial conversation.  We hope that you, as ICJSE participants, will take this opportunity to share a best practice, model, program, or any other aspect of your school which might be beneficial for our network.  Workshops may be presented in any of the three languages of the Jesuits: English, French or Spanish.  Please visit our website for more information on how to submit ICJSE workshop proposals.

Mass

Daily throughout the colloquium, Mass will be celebrated at St. Ignatius Parish on the campus of Boston College.  ICJSE participants are invited to minister at our masses as lectors, Eucharistic ministers, chorus members and instrumentalists.  Anyone wishing to volunteer for a ministry or who has further questions about mass at the Colloquium can contact Lo Elverrillo at [email protected] by March 15.  Mass will be celebrated in each of the languages of the Jesuits (English, French and Spanish), and we hope to have representation from every region.

Join us on Facebook
We invite you to join us on Facebook and "like" the ICJSE Facebook page.  This page is our primary forum for pre-colloquium dialogue.  This is a wonderful opportunity to get acquainted with other ICJSE participants, to establish contacts, to make plans to meet other Jesuits and educators in Boston, and to share examples of your network in action.  We encourage you to join the discussion and raise issues that are of interest to you.  Please feel free to share any pictures, web links, or videos that you find significant.  Your contributions are essential to begin a meaningful dialogue!
