Top The E.D.'s Territory

Purim has always been one of my favorite holidays. The story of Purim is one of the most inspiring stories in the entire Bible, not to mention the most exciting, filled with happening parties and a beauty contest. As I discussed in my talk on February 13, Megillat Esther can be interpreted as a work of romantic realism--demonstrating the power of individuals to make difficult decisions to achieve a happy ending.

So today, as the modern day Haman--the leader of Iran--seeks to destroy, massacre and exterminate the Jewish people, we will prevail through our courageous action, guided by the belief, in the words of the Jewish savior Mordecai, "that relief and deliverance will come to the Jews from another quarter." Let the Jews and Israel be that "quarter."

We have a slew of exciting events coming up that stand up to Jewish persecutors, including our panel presentation this Sunday on anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism on college campuses, two talks with the ZOA's very own Morton Klein, and a special screening of student films coming out of Ariel University Center in association with the prestigious Israel Film Festival.

We hope to see you there, and check out my special Purim message below!

Yours truly,

Orit's Sig

ZOA Praises Parts of Obama's Speech on Israel, Iran - But Concerned About His Record on These Matters

The ZOA has praised President Barack Obama's positive statements about Israel, the U.S./Israel relationship and on the Iranian nuclear weapons issue in his March speech to the America Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), but is concerned about some parts of the President's actual record to date on some of these matters.  READ MORE.
Analysis of Obama's Rhetorical Style Reveals His Moral and Political Ambiguity

While the above piece has focused on the veracity of President Obama's claims of his pro-Israel record, ZOA West's Director Orit Arfa focused on his rhetorical style in her blog in the Jewish Journal, ZOAngel. A careful analysis of Obama's speech at AIPAC will show that he is extremely ambiguous--perhaps purposefully so--enabling him to appease both opponents and fans alike. He often uses lofty words--like "dignity," "democracy" and "freedom"--but essentially robs those words of any meaning, paving the way for policies steeped in moral relativism at best, tolerance of evil at worst. ZOA Board Member and Expert of the Arab-Israeli conflict, Eli Hertz, Spells Out the Legal Right for Jews to Settle anywhere in Palestine, the area west of the Jordan river

On February 11, to an audience of nearly 80 people at Stephen S. Wise Temple, Eli Hertz proved through a thorough analysis of historical documents the absolute international legal right of Jews to settle in all lands west of the Jordan river, debunking Arab claim to the land and the false notion that Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria (The West Bank) are illegal.

In fact, Palestine was never a nation, people or sovereign country--Palestine is a geographical area. At the San Remo Peace Conference (1920), the World War I Allied Supreme Council voted unanimously to carve out the land of Israel (which initially included present-day Jordan) as the territorial basis for the Jewish national home. The League of Nations officially adopted the agreement, which was subsequently absorbed by the United Nations. No UN resolution or negotiations have invalidated the irrevocable right of Jews to settle in all the land west of the Jordan River.

Executive Director Orit Arfa Introduces Concept of Rational Jewish Self-Interest

Through a comparison of The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand and  the Book of Esther, Orit Arfa discussed the idea of rational Jewish self-interest

Photo: Micha Keynan

at the Luxe Sunset Hotel on February 13. Ayn Rand's idea of rational self-interest is the theme her acclaimed novel The Fountainhead, and it upholds the idea that individuals must remain true to their identity and rational judgement to thrive, without falling prey to the whims, irrational opinions, and false preferences of others--and without violating the rights of others. Using the The Fountainhead as inspiration, Arfa concluded that the theme of the Book of Esther is Jewish self-interest, the idea that Jews must act in their rational self-interest for self-preservation.

Jewish self-interest has three layers: 1. The freedom to observe Judaism according to the Jews' selfish desire, whether through religious, cultural or historical rites, rituals and ties (so long as no coercion is inflicted on others). 2. The physical defense of Jews, particularly in the face of racism. 3. Aligning Jewish survival with human survival.

The theme is most clearly expressed through the character of Esther, who was on the verge of sacrificing her Jewish identity and values for supposed safety in the Persian palace. She eventually realized her existence would be meaningless if she didn't stand up for the freedom and safety of the Jewish people--and ultimately--her true self--a lesson for all Jews as they struggle to assert their identity and values in an increasingly anti-Semitic world.

NGO Monitor President Prof. Gerald Steinberg Strips Pro-Arab NGO's of their Human Rights Facade

Photo: Stuart Volkow

Some NGOs in Israel are waging an insidious assault on Israel's legitimacy, Prof. Gerald Steinberg said at a joint ZOA-Children of Holocaust Survivors event held at the Luxe Sunset Hotel on February 21. With names that give an aura of morality and idealism, like Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, NGO's with a pro-Arab agenda actually subvert human rights by manipulating vocabulary to smear Israel (e.g. Israel=Apartheid and IDF soldiers ="war criminals") and posturing themselves as experts that get quoted in major newspapers and government reports. (For example, the Goldstone Report which accused Israel of war crimes drew from many of the fabricated reports of NGOs.) Funded in large party by European governments, these NGOs are motivated by an anti-Israel, anti-Western, anti-Capitalism ideology. NGO Monitor works to expose the human rights fašade of these NGOs. ZOA Urged Harvard to Cancel Conference Calling for Israel's Destruction

Last week, the ZOA condemned Harvard University for agreeing to host and fund the "One State Conference: Israel/Palestine and the One State Solution" during March 3-4 and wrote to Harvard University President, Professor Drew Gilpin Faust, calling upon her to rescind the decision to host the Conference. The ZOA also called upon Harvard donors to strongly protest Harvard's hosting of the Conference. READ MORE.

UPDATE from Daniel Pollak and Joshua London, Co-Directors, ZOA Government Relations

This month's ZOA Washington activity has centered on two letters that the ZOA has been helping members of Congress send to the Obama administration. The first letter, originated by Rep. Joe Walsh (R-IL) and Rep. Howard Berman (D-CA, 28th), is addressed to Attorney General Holder. It asks him to enforce the Koby Mandell Act, which enables prosecution of terrorist acts where Americans were the victims, regardless of where the act was committed. In October, 2011, as part of the deal to obtain the release of Gilad Shalit, over a thousand Palestinian prisoners were released. Among the released were more than a dozen terrorists with American blood on their hands. The letter calls for the extradition of these criminals and their eventual conviction in US courts for their crimes against American citizens. READ MORE.

A new poll has shown that a majority of the American public (58%) supports tough measures - including the possible use of military force - to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. ZOA Critical of Obama Admin. Claims that Israel is Using Mujahideen el-Khalq to Attack Iranian Nuclear Program

The ZOA has criticized the Obama Administration for statements claiming that Israel has been funding and training Iranian dissidents to assassinate scientists involved in Iran's nuclear program. According to NBC, Washington insiders confirmed there is a close relationship between Mossad and Mujahideen el-Khalq (MEK), the largest group affiliated with the National Council of Resistance of Iran. The claim that Israel has been training and using MEK dissidents to carry out attacks on Iranian nuclear scientists has been made repeatedly by the Iranian regime itself. READ MORE.
ZOA Condemns P.A.'s Abbas' Incitement in Speech Claiming Israel Is Harming Al Aqsa Mosque, Denying Religious Freedom in Jerusalem

The ZOA has condemned Palestinian Authority (PA) president Mahmoud Abbas' blatant anti-Israel incitement in a speech he delivered in Doha, Qatar, in which he accused Israel of inventing a Jewish historical connection to Jerusalem, working to undermine the foundations of the Al-Aqsa mosque atop Jerusalem's Temple Mount, and harming freedom of religious worship in Jerusalem. The ZOA has called upon President Barack Obama to strongly condemn Abbas' Doha speech. READ MORE.
Obama's Refusal to Condemn or Penalize Abbas' PA/Hamas Alliance Fits Pattern of Non-Responses to PA Pro-Terror, Anti-Peace Acts

The Zionist Organization of America (ZOA), which criticized the Obama Administration this week for its refusal to condemn or penalize Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah-controlled Palestinian Authority (PA) for its alliance with the terrorist organization Hamas, has pointed to a troubling, long-term pattern of the Obama Administration refusing to condemn PA pro-terror, anti-peace acts.
