April 2012
Empower Hour
Violence against women is a serious national issue. 61% of Canadians personally know a woman who has been physically or sexually abused

But this April, you can help end violence against women by participating in our 8th annual Shelter from the Storm campaign.

This weekend, on Saturday April 14, you can register or donate to Empower Hour, a one hour workout taking place in eight cities across Canada. And then head over to Winners or HomeSense to purchase one of the amazing products designed exlusively for us.

Through your donations, you will be helping women like Anastasia, whose life changed the day she had her son Max.

This month, help us end violence against women.

Thank you,

"I didn't want him to be like his dad..."

I used to live in a very abusive situation with my ex-husband and my father-in-law.

My ex-husband was verbally very abusive, the humiliating kind.
Some things were just so bad, I can't say them.

He started to put ideas in my head that I'm a useless person, that I couldn't do anything in this life without him.

When I was six months pregnant, he hit me. I was crying because it was our anniversary and I wanted to spend the day with him, but he got very upset. At the time, I thought it was my fault but later I realized it wasn't. It's normal to be emotional when you're pregnant, but it's not normal for a man to raise his hand against a woman.

Find out how Anastasia took control of her own life and that of her son.

You can help over 30,000 women and children in Canada rebuild their lives after abuse.

You can support the national Shelter from the Storm campaign by visiting your local Winners or HomeSense and purchasing one of the products designed exclusively

"We do not have equality..."

A lot of people seem to think that women are equal now, so problems like domestic violence no longer exist.

But it does exist. You just don't usually see it because it's behind closed doors.

I don't think I understood the extent of the problem myself until I served on the  Violence Prevention Grants committee.

That was a real eye-opener for me.
