Good day!
Welcome to the April edition of the Hamilton Economic Development Newsletter.

2011 Annual Review 2011 proved to be another tremendous year for Hamilton by once again demonstrating that this city's economic resurgence is a trend and not an anomaly. Although, our City's building permit total did not surpass the record $1 Billion mark set in 2010, we still achieved solid numbers with our Non-Residential (Commercial & industrial) permits representing 21% of our annual total.
There were many other positive signs of growth last year with the most visible being the presence of eight construction cranes on the Hamilton skyline representing the new St. Josephs Mental Health complex, the Staybridge Suites hotel, and the high-rise residential developments of Horizon Homes and Urban West Developments.
Some of the other great indicators included; a 3.4 % industrial vacancy rate; a 12% downtown office vacancy rate; one million s.f. of vacant industrial space filled with new companies; our Port generating $5.9 Billion in economic activity annually; over 300 new jobs created in the Creative Industries cluster; and an unemployment rate of 6.3 %.
The fact that our growth wasn't limited to one industry group but instead was representative of a wide range of sectors was the "icing on the cake" and the reason why the Conference Board of Canada gave Hamilton a 92% rating on the diversity of our economy.

Time to 'Start Up' a Business in Hamilton
Startup Weekend Hamilton 2 (Mohawk College - 135 Fennell Avenue West, April 27 - 29, 2012) - aims to foster a spirit of innovation, entrepreneurship, and teamwork by combining tech experts with business professionals and provide them with the opportunity to gain the hands-on experience of working on a project together from beginning to end. It includes a mix of designers, developers, young professionals, creative professionals, college and university students, and recent grads. The event will make use of Mohawk's stunning new Collaboratory space, which features an open concept communal workspace with access to many technological amenities, encouraging participants to share with and learn from one another. The weekend will start around 6pm on Friday evening with a casual networking session, dinner, and keynote speakers. That evening, any participant who has an idea for a SWH2 project will get one minute to pitch to the group and then participants will self organize into subgroups based around the most popular pitches. On Saturday and Sunday, teams will work to create a prototype of their innovation, build a business/marketing plan, and develop their presentation. During this time, they will be provided with meals, snacks and beverages, and there will be periodic breakouts for speakers or team building activities. Volunteer mentors will be available to assist teams with any questions or roadblocks they may come across.
The work will stop at 3pm on Sunday, and each team will have the opportunity to give a brief presentation to a panel of judges who will decide on the distribution of prizes. That evening, a wrap-up party will be held to celebrate the accomplishments of the weekend, and give teams the opportunity to network with themselves, sponsors, and community VIPs.
