Message from Lisa Ferentz LCSW-C, DAPA
Founder and President
Dear Friends,
We continue to get a wonderful response to our trainings, both in levels of attendance and the evaluations, and I am grateful to all of you for supporting our efforts and spreading the word about our offerings to your colleagues. I continue to be so proud of our faculty and their amazing contributions to the Institute and to our field. Please take the time to read our newest blog by Denise Tordella, an expert in trauma, addiction, and domestic violence, and a gifted presenter at the Institute. I am also so humbled and gratified about the response I have received regarding my book. It is so exciting to hear that clinicians are finding the strategies useful in their work. The idea was to clinically empower and support you by giving you a de-pathologized framework for "difficult" clients with complex presenting problems. In addition to providing you with concrete, creative tools, I wanted to emphasize the importance of paying close attention to coun ter-transeference, vicarious traumatization, and the need for self-care. If you are able to join us on May 6th, for a dessert reception, networking, and book signing, I would love to see you there! Above all, remember to keep taking care of you!
Lisa

TED Talk Ideas Worth Spreading
Check out MIT Technology and Society Specialist Sherry Turkle's recent TED Talk "Connected, but alone?" The talk explores the impact that technology is having on human relationships, and how being with others while simultaneously texting, playing games or checking e-mail on our cellphones, etc. are either compromising or replacing our capacity to engage in genuinely intimate conversation and interactions with others. After viewing Sherry's talk, learn more about this topic via her book "Alone Together."

Living in a Virtual War Zone: The Children and Adolescents of Domestic Violence by Denise Tordella, M.A., LPC
A 2006 survey of American households revealed that nearly 30% of children, many of whom are very young, live in homes where there is some form of intimate partner/domestic violence. Children and adolescents who witness or experience trauma, including domestic violence, display increases in stress hormones comparable to those displayed in combat veterans. This research finding makes sense from the perspective that these children and adolescents are living in a virtual war zone! Children and adolescents may experience long term effects from chronic exposure to domestic violence which may include: impaired academic performance; reduced levels of motor and social skills; behavior problems; substance abuse; self-harming behaviors; changes in brain physiology and function; and emotional difficulties including depression, anxiety disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder.
