We now carry BPA-free water bottles from the Purified Water Store. As a result of the new quality of bottle, Purified Water Store has enacted an ownership policy of the new bottles, so when you buy one, you own it! You can still exchange an empty bottle for a full one at Island Natural, but we will no longer offer cash refunds on the BPA-free bottles.

Herb of the Month: Ashwagandha

  

Ashwagandha is the most important adaptogen in the Ayurvedic system of medicine. It prevents stress-related disorders by stopping the depletion of Vitamin C and cortisol in the body. Ashwagandha boosts neurotransmitters in the brain to give you an overall sense of well being. It helps with healthy thyroid function and tames tension headaches. This herb rejuvenates and energizes the nervous system, but also promotes relaxation and restful sleep. Ashwagandha acts as a precursor to natural steroids produced by the body to soothe arthritic pain and joint inflammation.

 

Available in loose, powder, pill, tea or tincture form. 

 

Recipe of the Month: Organic Strawberry Date Bars


These Raw Strawberry Date Bars come together in a jiffy, but grab a napkin - they're very sticky!  Although there is no sugar added, the dates and strawberries are incredibly sweet, making these bars ideal for dessert. 
 
     1 1/2 cups pitted dates
1/4 cup raw macadamia nuts
2 TBSP Rolled Oats 
1 cup organic strawberries, stemmed, sliced
2 TBSP Gomashio 
 
Pulse dates, nuts, oats and salt in a food processor until combined. You may need to stir the mixture occasionally so that it chops the dates and nuts fairly evenly. Press the date mixture into the bottom of a
9-by-5-inch loaf pan lined with parchment paper. Mash half the strawberries and spread on top of date mixture. Top with remaining strawberries and sprinkle with Gomashio. Slice into rectangles.

Everyone at Island Natural loves fresh organic fruits and vegetables. This month we ask our staff what's their favourite fruit or vegetable.
 
Al - Raspberries and Medjool Dates "Can't go wrong with nature's candy!"  
 
April - Black Lacinato Kale "I love eating it plain, lightly steamed with lemon juice, cut finely in a salad or dehydrated to make kale chips."  
 
Casey - Lacinato Kale "Steamed with lovely olive oil, fresh lime juice and the Naam Miso Gravy."  
 
Cathy - Spicy Avocado Dip "I blend together avocados, cilantro, garlic, jalapenos, plum tomatoes, red onions and lime juice then serve with tortilla chips."  
 
Chanyce - Asparagus "I love it baked with olive oil, lots of garlic and salt/pepper to taste!"  
 
Chris - Cauliflower "I love lightly steamed cauliflower topped with a garlic-ginger sauce that includes tahini, miso and fresh lemon and then served with sun dried tomatoes on polenta." 
 
Doug - Beets "Cut into slices, steamed and then sprinkled with dill and Spectrum Organic Balsamic Vinegar, toss to coat and eat warm. So Good."  
 
Heather - Simple Guac "I like avocado, sea salt, lemon juice and Herbamare mixed together. It's deliciously good with corn chips or in wraps with salsa. Yummy!"  
 
Liza - Raspberries "I like Olympic Krema Greek Style Yogurt topped with Nature's Path Ginger Zinger Granola and raspberries."  
 
Melanie - Mushrooms "I love adding different types of mushrooms to my awesome homemade cream of mushroom soup recipe."  
 
Nadia - Baby Bok Choy "I like so many different fruits and veggies, but right now I love steamed Baby Bok Choy on a bed of quinoa with a homemade tahini-chipotle sauce."  
 
Pablo - Strawberries "I love organic strawberries dipped in chocolate. A sensual antioxidant powerhouse!"  
 
Rhonda - Roasted Root Vegetables "Roasted carrots, golden beets and parsnips tossed in herbs, olive oil, balsamic vinegar and maple syrup and I add chopped asparagus at the end for a delicious dish."
