A special thank you to our Produce Manager Alyson, Bruce for the entertainment, Creekmore's Coffee, Dudink's Garden, Elgie Road Farms, Frank, Island Hothouse, Jacobs Farm, Shaw Bio Farms, and Vancouver Island Grain & Milling. And of course THANK YOU to our great customers who shopped! Staff Picks
|
September is traditionally a back-to-school, back-to-work, back into the swing of things kind of month! With that in mind, here are our staff picks...
Alison - "Dragonfly Dreaming Tuscan Sunshine Lip Balm with organic Italian Lemon - so smooth and refreshing! I also love the Suns N' Roses Lip Balm with the same tried and true formula as Baby's Bum, but now in a lip balm applicator - I like the antiseptic and healing properties."
April - "I add Harmonic Arts 6 Mushroom Blend to my morning drink. As adaptogens, mushrooms are an amazing help to the immune system in times of stress."
Casey - "I love to eat lots of fresh local blueberries! Also I like Ashwagandha to help my adrenals and sooth my panic that the days are getting shorter and there's still so much I want to do during this summer!"
Chanyce - "New Roots Chill Pills help me 'chill' out!"
Chris - "Dr. Ohira's Probiotics 12 Plus are vegetarian live bacteria that help make B-vitamins and support the immune system."
Doug - "Annie Chun's Roasted Seaweed Snacks Wasabi Flavour are crisp, bite size seaweed pieces that taste so good I ate a whole pack on my way home!"
Jim - "I like Natural Choice's Organic Frozen Fruit Bars that are cane juice sweetened, have no corn sugars and our perfect for the last hot summer days and that weekend picnic."
Nadia - "I love Purica's Cordyceps. I take these vegan medicinal mushrooms before I exercise outside to boost my immune system, improve cardiovascular performance and feel invigorated!"
Pablo - "Natural Calm Magnesium Oil or Gel are a highly bioavailable source of this important mineral. Topical magnesium bypasses the gut and is absorbed rapidly when applied. I find it reduces stress, soothes muscles and is great post workout."
Rhonda - "Goldbaum's Gluten Free Cocoa Sugar Cones topped with Coconut Bliss' Chocolate Hazelnut Fudge Ice Cream - too good to only have one!"

Recipe of the Month: Zabaglione with Fresh Berries
| Zabaglione [zah-bahl-YOH-nay] is a famous Italian custard dessert served with fresh sliced fruit or berries. While this recipe is a bit more labour intensive, the results are worth it!
5 egg yolks (Try our new Rabbit River Farms Eggs) 1/3 cup organic cane sugar 1/3 cup dry or sweet Marsala wine (you can substitute sherry, Madeira, Grand Marnier, sparkling wine or dessert wine) 1 cup heavy cream or whipping cream, whipped until stiff 5 1/4 cup fresh berries Set up a double boiler or use a medium size stainless steel bowl over a pot of simmering water. Make sure the bottom of the bowl is not touching the water or else the eggs may scramble. Beat the egg yolks and sugar together approximately 3 minutes or until pale yellow. Slowly whisk in the wine and set the bowl over the barely simmering water. Continue to beat constantly, approximately 10 to 15 minutes, until the eggs triple in volume and thicken. As the cook, they will stiffen, but still hold air. Make sure to continuously whip around the bowl to cook the eggs evenly. If the eggs begin to curdle, pull away from the water a few seconds to cool while continuously whisking. Remove from heat and cool the mixture completely in the refrigerator. When the mixture is cool, gently fold in the whipped cream. To serve, dollop some zabaglione into a glass. Add fresh berries, add another dollop of the mixture and top with a few berries and a mint sprig. Zabaglione on its own can be stored in the refrigerator for several days. Makes 6-8 servings.
