Dear Community Members,

There's something very special about the place we call home. For me, home is Tustin. It's the place where my husband and I chose to raise our children, where I met wonderful friends and found a career I am passionate about. With each year, I find more to love about this community. It's a compassionate and optimistic place to live. I learned long ago that when we step outside of our own four walls and touch our community - the larger home in which we all live - we all benefit.

The greater Tustin area is much more than the sum of its parts. Ask someone to list special features of our community and you'll hear some interesting answers - The Historical Society where we learn about early Tustin; Programs at the library that spark the imagination; Organizations and churches where food pantries fill in the gaps when the paycheck won't stretch to the end of the month; the Police Department that protects our homes and businesses; and events like Broadway in the Park that bring us all together on a summer evening. Some will talk about our extensive youth sports activities or accessible school tutoring programs, while others will mention our wonderful Senior Center. Many are grateful for programs for those with special needs while others will boast of our ability to work together to fund an art wall in a park. These very different components of our community all combine to make greater Tustin home.

Those components of the community share something else in common. Each one has benefited from the Tustin Community Foundation. In fact, the Community Foundation awarded more than $150,000 to local causes in just the past few years. That's all because people like you have chosen to give where you live. Your contributions of time and treasure have helped to make the greater Tustin area a very special place to call home.

This holiday season I urge you to "give where we live or work" and support a nonprofit organization or local school that means something to you. Sometimes volunteers are more precious than gold, so gifts of your time and talents are welcomed by most groups. If you're not sure where to give or volunteer, please visit our website www.tustincommunityfoundation.org for a list of some deserving local organizations. Or, contribute directly to the Tustin Community Foundation and we'll add it with other donations and pass it on to where it will make a difference.

Finally, I'd like to thank you for making Tustin such a special place to live.

Thanksgiving Breakfast
Each year the Tustin Community Foundation hosts the Thanksgiving Breakfast to raise funds for our Grant Program.
Congratulations to the following non-profit organizations who are the recipients of the 2011 Tustin Community Foundation Grants.

The Boys & Girls Club of Tustin received funds that will be matched to purchase 2 slightly used 15 passenger vans to assist with outreach to some of the neediest youth in our community. It is our hope that these vans can be shared with other organizations since the cost of transportation continues to skyrocket for nonprofit organizations.

The Legacy Foundation awards scholarships to local special education students and received a grant to cover the cost of a community meeting with school officials, past scholarship awardees and their families, Legacy Foundation donors and Board Members to determine how their program can be expanded and enhanced.

Mary's Shelter received financial support for their effective Prenatal Care Services Program to empower and equip vulnerable teen mothers and their babies for lives of hope, dignity and self-sufficiency.

Olive Crest received a grant to purchase small appliances, such as microwave ovens, for the foster and probation youth homes in their Transitional Housing Placement Program located in Tustin Legacy.

The Orange County Rescue Mission's Village of Hope received a grant to provide 1000 meals for families.

Special Olympics Orange County received funds to help cover the increased cost of transportation to competitions for their Tustin area Special Olympians.

The Tustin Community Foundation awarded a grant to the Tustin High School Baseball Booster Club to kick-off their Scoreboard Fund. For the past eight seasons they have been the only team in our district and their league without a scoreboard.

Sunday Suppers received a grant to purchase food for their free Sunday evening meals for people in our community who are hungry. 1/3 are elderly men and women, 1/3 are families with children and 1/3 are homeless.

Tustin Family Youth Center received funds to purchase 1250 toothbrushes for their Holiday Baskets given to needy residents in the Tustin community.

Women Helping Women received a grant to support their Professional Apparel component of their Employment Success Program to provide Tustin residents with 2 complete business outfits and help them re-enter the workforce.

The Foundation awarded a grant to the Young Mens's Christian Organization of Orange County, known as the YMCA, to purchase work stations for students to use to do homework in their after school tutoring facility at Estock Elementary School in Tustin.

Merry Housewarming! Yes, we know that Merry Christmas or Happy Chanukah may be a more frequent wish this time of year. But did you know that it's also time for Family Promise of Orange County to prepare for the opening of our Day Center? FPOC is dedicated to helping homeless families return to self-sufficiency in stable housing. FPOC leverages the facilities of faith-based organizations to keep operating costs low, and their arrangement with local schools keeps students on track. Check them out at  www.familypromiseorangecounty.org. You can help them open their doors in January 2012.by sending a housewarming gift ranging from soap to furniture. Join TCF in wishing Orange County families a warm welcome!

Green Holiday Tips

Holiday cards-Did you know 2.6 billion holiday cards sold each year could fill the size of a football field 10 stories high? Consider switching to emailed holiday cards or try a photo sharing site instead of a traditional card.  Buy cards on recycled paper.  Buy cards that donate proceeds to a good cause (like Cancer Research).  Reuse holiday cards you receive and create gift tags!  Recycle your cards when the holidays are over.

Buy a Live Tree-Nearly all Christmas trees are grown on farms, meaning they are planted yearly and not depleting our forests. Artificial trees are made with petroleum-based products and cannot be recycled.  Recycle your tree at the end of the holiday season. CR&R and Waste Management will pick your tree up and compost it.  Rent a live Christmas tree- Find a location in your area that rents out and picks up your live tree.

Lights-Switch to LED lights. They are 90% more efficient than incandescent lights.  Set lights on a timer to save energy and turn them off when you go to bed. You'll be able to enjoy them without using energy all night long.  Try using solar powered lights when possible.  The smaller the bulb, the lower energy cost.

Paper, paper, paper!  Did you know that there are an estimated 20 million tons of EXTRA waste between Thanksgiving and Christmas? Four million tons are wrapping paper alone.  Skip wrapping whenever possible. Do you really need to wrap a bicycle?  Try hiding gifts and giving clues where to find them.  Make the wrapping part of the gift by using scarves and kitchen towels.  Use fabric gift bags that can be reused again and again.  Recycle ribbon. If every US family reused 2 feet of ribbon it would save 38,000 miles of ribbon.  If you must wrap, use wrap made of recycled paper. Shiny, metallic and plastic coated wrapping paper cannot be recycled.  If you are mailing, use recycled packing material (never the foam peanuts-Styrofoam counts for 25% of the waste in our landfills and can never be recycled)

Cut Back!  A recent survey showed that 78% of Americans wished holidays were less materialistic!  Give a gift of yourself such as family recipes, a night of babysitting, a hand car wash, a homemade dinner.  Donate to a charity or non-profit in the name of your family. Most feel the best gift is being together.

Shop Smart!  If you are out shopping, organize your list first to save on gas. Buy local.  Opt for battery free toys whenever possible.  Look for eco-friendly tops that are BPA-free, lead free and made from sustainable or recycled materials.

Tustin As It Once Was

Juanita Lovret, who has written the column Remember When for the Tustin News for many years, has completed her second book, Tustin As It Once Was.  Available for order on line, it will soon be available at the Tustin Area Museum as well as local book sellers.

Following a style similar to her popular column, the book covers people and events in Tustin from its founding by Columbus Tustin to its Centennial celebration in 1986, according to the publisher, The Heritage Press, Charleston, S.C.

Santa's Sleigh is Coming To Town

Santa, Mrs. Claus, and Santa's helpers will visit every neighborhood in Tustin again this year so that Santa can meet every child in Tustin and give each one a candy cane. The sleigh will be "flown" by volunteer police officer George Valleviene as he has done since the late 1990s. Fifteen years ago the Tustin Community Foundation, then led by former Mayor and current Community Foundation President Chuck Puckett, donated $2,000 to the Police Department so that they could build a sleigh for Santa to use to make sure that each child in Tustin experiences the magic of the season.  In 2009 the Foundation once again donated funds, $1,562.00 to be exact, to rehab the sleigh.  "Some kids can't afford to go to South Coast Plaza and have their pictures taken with Santa so we bring Santa to their street." Said Officer Valleviene."My third night helping Santa, during our first season, we turned on Bonner Drive and there was just one child waiting. The little girl stood, all dressed up waiting outside of her house. As the sleigh flew down the street, the girl started bouncing... vibrating... oscillating... and she yelled, 'Grandma, Santa came to see me! See me! See me!' That's why we do this,"said "Santa Mayor" Chuck Puckett.  To see where Santa is flying tonight, click on the link below.

Mayor's Inaugural Dinner

Mark your calendars and plan to attend the Tustin Mayor's Inaugural Dinner on Thursday, February 2 at the beautiful Tustin Ranch Golf Club. The non-partisan Foundation appreciates the support of the past and current Mayors of Tustin for allowing us to raise much needed program funds through this fun annual event held in their honor. All of the funds raised at the 7th annual dinner will be poured back into our community through the Foundation's many programs including Partners in Parks, Volunteer in Tustin and our new LIVEgreen project. SPONSORSHIPS ARE AVAILABLE. The Tustin Community Foundation is supported 100% by donations from individuals and corporations and is not funded by the City of Tustin nor does it receive taxpayer dollars.
