Is it safe to plant?

 

This is a very common question this time of year as we enter into the winter season.  The simple answer is that it depends on what you are planting.  For some plants, such as perennials with smaller, more shallow root systems it is better to wait till spring as temperatures are beginning to drop.  For other plants, such as larger deciduous & evergreen trees and shrubs, planting in fall and winter allows the plant's roots a chance to settle in during the colder months, giving the tree a jump start on the spring growing season.  Planting during a tree or shrubs dormancy period lessons the shock that transplanted trees undergo and better equips them for the heat of summer.
