Fall Watering Tips:
Seeded Lawns
Lawns that have just been seeded need to be watered until grass is established. Keep the soil moist and do not over water. If you have standing water or the water is running off the lawn you are watering too much.
New Planting Material
Due to the extremely high temperatures and the below normal precipitation we had this summer and fall, many homeowners lost some of their trees and shrubs. Here are a few tips to help with newly planted landscape. After the installation, check your plants every few days for watering needs. This can be done by looking at the appearance of the plant or by inserting a metal rod or wooden stick into the soil ball. If you are unable to easily push the rod/stick more than a few inches into the ball, you are not watering enough. If the rod/stick slides easily all the way through the ball, you are overwatering. You can also check by placing your hand approx. 6 inches down from where the soil and mulch line meet and feel the root ball for wetness.
There are several ways to water your new plant material. One way is to allow a hose to trickle at the base of the tree for 20 minutes every 3 - 4 days. Another is to poke a few nail holes in the sides of a 5 gallon bucket near the bottom and set the bucket next to the trunk and fill it with water every few days. Another is to water by hand, applying water to the planting hole with a hose.
Remember, if the plant starts to turn yellow it is probably getting too much water. Plants are in need of water if the leaf tips start to turn brown. Also, you will most likely need to increase the water schedule in the summer months.
