Pest Watch
CICADAS
The Great Southern Brood which emerges every 17 years is upon us this year. Emergence is well underway in most Sout hern states and is just getting started in Missouri and Illinois. Adult Cicadas usually emerge in late May. Ground tempertures are the best indicators of when the cicada will emerge. Because they are cold-blooded, they will not emerge until ground temp is 64 degrees or higher.
Cicadas do not damage foliage like many other insects, instead the damage they cause is when the females lay their eggs in grooves in the tree branches which can cause parts of limbs to die. Young trees, ornamental trees, and fruit trees are most susceptable. Cicadas are most easily recognizable by their loud "singing," which the males use to attact females. Most adult cicadas only live approx. 2 weeks.
How to Treat: There is no real treatment to get rid of adult cicadas, but netting can be placed on trees to deter them. Handpicking or spraying them off of affected trees seems to work as well.
JAPANESE BEETLES It won't be long before June arrives and the Japanese Beetles begin to emerge. Typically you will begin to see them during the 3rd or 4th week of June. Here are a few facts to help you prepare and spot Japanese Beetles and prevent damage to your plant material. While they feed on over 200 types of plants, those that are most susceptible are the Japanese Maples, Cherry, Crabapple, Crapemyrtle, and Roses. You will typically see them feeding in the sun, on the upper side of the the leaves at the top of the tree or shrub. Beetles will feed on the interior of the leaf, until the leaf becomes skeletonized. The beetles typically change host plants every 3 days, and are attracted to plants that have been damaged by other beetles. Because these pests are usually active for approx. 6 weeks, early detection and control of leaf damage is important. How to treat: Chemically - Garden Tech Sevin is probably one of the best insecticides for Japanese Beetles (it is a contact killer, and should be sprayed when the beetles are first noticed feeding on plant. The chemical is safe to be used even in hot tempertures and will not burn plant foliage. Subsequent applications may be needed as the beetles are attracted to plant material that other beetles have already hosted on. Sevin can also be used to successfully control Tent Caterpillars on trees/shrubs and worms in vegetable gardens. Japanese Beetle damage is mainly aesthetic, rarely causing obvious health problems to the plants. |
