Residential Burglaries and Prevention Tips

Residential burglaries are on the rise in the 5th police precinct.

The majority of these burglaries are crimes of opportunity. Taking a few simple steps can help reduce the chance of becoming a victim.

As always, please remember to call 911 when you see any suspicious activity!

Patterns:

  • Many garage burglaries happen when garage service doors are unsecured or garage doors are open
  • Most burglars are entering (or reaching in) open windows
  • Some burglars are pushing in A/C units to gain access to the home
  • Many ground level apartments are being entered via open windows
  • Burglars will commonly use a garbage can (or anything available) to access a high window
Tips:
  • If your windows are within reaching height of the ground, do not leave them open unless screens and windows are pinned.
  • Secure your A/C unit.
  • Fill out a home inventory form! Make, model, and especially serial numbers are very important information in the event of a theft. Find more information on the Home Inventory FAQ sheet.
  • Secure your garage service door. If the lock doesn't work, fix it.
  • Install lighting around the main entrances to your home and garage.
