The Minneapolis Police Department released the following information about an increase in crime in the area.
September 19, 2011
Fifth Precinct Residents: In the area around Lake of the Isles there have recently been a number of garage burglaries and theft from motor vehicles.
The Fifth Precinct Minneapolis Police Department would like to update the residents on what has been done in the neighborhoods as a response to this pattern.
Within the past week and a half, 5 suspects have been arrested for tampering or theft from a motor vehicle, one suspect has been arrested for burglary and we are seeking to arrest three additional persons for their connections to cases. See the attachment at the end for pictures.
Please note the following pertinent information:
- Most of the burglaries have been garage burglaries, oftentimes where the garage was left unsecured via the service door or an open garage door.
- These arrests were largely due to the aid of the community:
- We received a number of suspicious person calls that alerted officers to concerns and provided them the ability to look into the activity
- Witnesses called 911 and stayed available for officers for follow up questions
- Owners of properties-both residential and rental-provided us with surveillance footage of suspects
Thank you to the community for watching out for your neighbors.
Please remember: - It is very important when you call 911 on suspicious activity, as the attached examples will show
- Lock your doors on your house and garage
- Ensure that your garage door closes before you leave
- If you park outside, treat your garage door opener like a key to your house
- Pin your windows so the screen can't be slit and your home entered
- Record the make, model and serial number of your valuables, especially bicycles
- Do not leave valuables visible in your vehicles
