Tornado Recover: How You Can Help

May 25, 2011

People throughout Minneapolis have been asking how they can help people affected by the tornado in North Minneapolis.

Donate funds, not goods:

  • The Minneapolis Foundation has established the Minnesota Helps - North Minneapolis Recovery Fund to assist with both housing and recovery-related needs. The Minneapolis Foundation will match donations.

    • To make a donation by credit card, go to www.giveMN.org.
    • Checks may be mailed to
      The Minneapolis Foundation
      80 S. 8th St., Suite 800
      Minneapolis, MN, 55402.
  • Make a donate to the Red Cross at www.redcrosstc.org.
  • Please do not donate goods at this time.

Volunteer:

The need for volunteers is limited at this time. However, City of Lakes Nordic Ski Foundation, Nice Ride Minnesota, and Surly Brewing are organizing clean-up crews for:

Thursday, May 26
Two shifts: 8:45 a.m.-1:00 p.m. and 12:45 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

All volunteers must check-in at Urban Homeworks, 1823 Emerson Ave. North and get a wristband. Parking is very limited in the storm damage area so please meet at the Wirth Park Chalet parking lot at 8:30 a.m. (for the first shift) or 12:30 p.m. (for the second shift) and carpool. If you are running late, go directly to Urban Homeworks.

Please wear boots and gloves and bring chain saws, safety glasses, hand saws, leaf rakes, shovels, wheel barrows, and a water bottle. If you have a pick-up truck that can be use to move tools and haul debris, please bring it.

To register as a volunteer, please send an email to volunteer@niceridemn.org and let them know if you have tools and/or special skills.

Thank you.
