Concord, NH Widower Fulfills a Promise to His Beloved

Gerard Joyal and his daughter, Marcia Burley |
Gerard Joyal, 86, a former U.S. Marine, fell in love with his childhood sweetheart, Beverly, in Franklin, New Hampshire. During their marriage, Beverly and Gerard often visited Perkins Cove to walk the Marginal Way.
Beverly passed away while the couple was on a waiting list for a bench. More than 25 years later, when the Marginal Way Footbridge Plaques became available, Gerard was quick to make a donation in Beverly's name. In his own words:
"I met Beverly when I was 12 and we married on April 12, 1947. Perkins Cove was always our favorite place and we frequently talked about having a bench on the Marginal Way, but none was available. We put our names on a wait list in the 1980's. Your call about the Honor Plaques has made it possible for me to fulfill a promise. I loved Beverly and I had promised her that we would be together on the Marginal Way forever. Now we will be."
CONGRATULATIONS, Gerard! You have won the 2011 Best Love Story from the Marginal Way. Clay Hill Farm Restaurant sent you a gift certificate for two! If you would like to reserve one of the remaining plaque spaces for your family, simply send a tax-deductible contribution in the amount of $10,000, payable to the Marginal Way Preservation Fund, PO Box 1455, Ogunquit, ME 03907.
