YMCA of Sohomish County to host annual Healthy Kids' Day on April 16

Healthy Kids Day is the Y's national initiative to improve the health and well-being of families across the country. On April 16, Ys hold events and encourages parents to make play dates with their kids every day as a simple way to become a healthier, more active and connected family. The Y knows that many parents struggle to find the time and resources to incorporate physical activity and healthy habits into their kids' daily routine. As a leading nonprofit for healthy living, the Y created Healthy Kids Day to celebrate and teach good health for kids, encourage active play and inspire a lifetime love of physical activity.

As a business owner in the Mill Creek community, the Mill Creek branch of the Y is looking for support of our Healthy Kids Day in the following ways:

1.  Provide resources, if your business has a focus on kids, families, or health (and we have a broad definition of health) through an activity booth or information table at the event.

2. Provide volunteers for the event!  Last year, there were over 500 participants and more are expected this year, so they Y needs event volunteers to help direct cars, check in, run activity booths, help keep the Y clean, answer questions, etc.

3. Donations for give-aways for participants. They often like to do freebies for guests through drawings.

A Message from the MCBA Board President
February 2011

Providing more value

In business, success can often depend on what you know and who you know. This is not a new idea: business associations, Chambers of Commerce and networking groups survive based on the need to realize these objectives for their members.

The Mill Creek Business Association will put you in touch with new customers and clients, but it will also provide practical business support, new ways to market, and increase your influence in the community. Membership also means staying on top of what is happening so that you can take advantage of opportunities rather than reacting to change.

As the association has grown, the demand to provide more value for our members has also increased. To this end, the MCBA board has just approved a 2011 budget that will provide more marketing funds to continue to promote "shop local," to acquire more business competencies through knowledgeable speakers, and to broaden its scope of influence by offering more ways to network to even more businesses owners. MCBA membership also offers a variety of ways to gain exposure, from mini-tradeshows to online advertising to targeted sponsorships.

It is the aspiration of the MCBA board to assist members in growing  professionally. Although our year has just begun, we hope to be introducing dynamic new ways to get connected, further strengthen our business community, provide a forum in which we come together and collaborate on solutions to issues effecting our competitive edge, our growth, our profitability, and even our very survival. We want to achieve a climate of economic propensity and a high quality of life for the City of Mill Creek.

As a member, you are valued and your opinion is important to us. Watch for an e-mail survey in the next couple of weeks as we ask for your input and bounce some ideas around for further development.

If you are not currently active, come and join us at the next lunch. Join  a committee, meet someone new, or let us know how we can assist you.

The MCBA has struck a deal with Michael La Marche & Vien Bui of Feng Shui Properties owners of Creekside Village for our Association monthly lunches. New lunch location
Starting in March

More space and table top dining

The MCBA has struck a deal with Michael LaMarche DDS of Forum Dental Creek to use one of the upstairs spaces at Creekside Village for our Association monthly lunches. Why the change?

1. Growth. As we increase our membership the layout of the council chambers was no longer ideal for our group.
2. Parking. Many members have mentioned that parking can be tough around City Hall. The new Creekside Village location is not only surrounded by parking, but there is also a parking garage underneath the building that we are welcome to use.
3. Tables. The new location will be set with tables that seat 10, so you no longer will have to eat on your lap.
4. Extras. The new space is connected to extra rooms large enough to accommodate a mini-trade show, a committee meeting, or other special add on to our lunch.

MCBA Board Vice President Bridgette Barrington and Secretary Sue McNeely have been instrumental in making this transition work. We thank them for their efforts. Watch for another announcement in the March newsletter with specifics about the exact location.
Mill Creek Festival Meeting
Plan to stay after lunch for the next Festival Committee meeting

Festival dates and location agreed on, now the real work begins

After the January lunch, several members stayed to meet with Mill Creek Festival Chair Kevin Giboney to start planning for this year's event, which takes place on Saturday and Sunday, July 16-17. The location will remain the same as last year, along Mill Creek Blvd.

Committee directors were announced, but most are looking for co-directors to train for future festivals. Here is a list of the directors to date:

Sue McNeely: Commercial Booths
Linda Martin: Artists Booths
Larry, Trina and Katie: Pet Plaza
Patricia: Beer Garden
Heather Taylor: Kid's Plaza
Jim MacMillan: Onsite Operations
Bob Meyer: Food Booths
Theresa Poalucci: Program
Jody Westfall: Social Media Marketing and Public Relations
Thad Hoover: Website
Bill Temple: Treasurer
Rani Bai: Signage
Debra and Andrea: Community Stage
Bill Raynalds: Procurment
Bridget Barrington: VIP Party

Areas that still require directors:
Sponsorship (need co-director to work with Kevin Giboney)
Traffic
Parking
Volunteer Coordinator

"We will also need to canvas the business area and let folks know about the festival and identify any issues we will need to work on," said Giboney. " Please let me know if you would like to be a goodwill ambassador. I envision that each ambassador would canvass a given section and be the ongoing contact for those businesses leading up to the festival."

The festival is a great way to market your business in a unique one-on-one way with the community. It is also a great opportunity to really get to know the other members of the MCBA by volunteering.

Tomorrows committee meeting will start directly after the MCBA lunch at 1:00 in City Hall. Plan to be there!

Networking Opportunities

Plan to attend After-Hours Event

A Canine Experience will cohost the next MCBA After-Hours event along with Acclaimed Photography. Not only is the a great way to get to know more about these two Association businesses, it is also a fun way to network.

It is easy to swing by after work, as the event begins at 5:30 pm and lasts until 7:00 pm. Light snacks will be served.

A Canine Experience, Inc. is located at: 17125 State Route 9 S.E., Snohomish, WA 98296. You can contact them at 360-668-0350.

Business Fair at March MCBA lunch

Along with our new lunch location, the networking committee will be making great use of the new space with a Business Fair. The first eight MCBA members to call the networking committee chair, Heidi, will get a free table to show off their wares or materials and discuss what they can do to assist your business. To reach Heidi, phone 425-489-2569.

Morning coffee with the MCBA

Don't miss the chance for a great cup of joe and some business leads on Thursday March 24 at Lady Latté. These morning networking opportunities are becoming quite popular and the first cup is on the Association!
