Just 2 Dads expands with third location
After over five years of a successful partnership, Kevin Giboney and Dave Keen of Just 2 Dads have opened a third location for their Allstate Insurance agency. With thriving offices in Mill Creek and Mountlake Terrace, the new office is located in Lynnwood at 2027 196th St. S.W., Ste. R6.

"I live less than a mile from the new office," said Giboney. "I drive past the location every day on my commute to my office in Mill Creek. I coach my daughter's basketball and softball teams at the Alderwood Boys and Girls Club, practically right across the street from it."
Giboney will spend time at the office until new agents are hired and trained, and then spend his time at each of Just 2 Dads' three locations.

Just 2 Dads offers home, auto, recreation, commercial, disability and life insurance, as well as financial services such as retirement planning and college savings plans.
According to the Just 2 Dads website, the partners promise personalized service, starting with a customized plan and ending with their customer's peace of mind. As family men, they know the value of community and relationships, and the need to secure those through financial protection.

Take Responsibility for your Business Culture

Responsibility Cultures has been a certified distributor of LCI's Shared Values Process® (SVP®) since 1996. The SVP®has been named by Leadership Excellence Magazine as one of the "Top 10 Leadership Development Programs" and one of the "Top 10 Independent Consulting and Training Organizations" in the United States. Dunn & Bradstreet has ranked LCI in the "top 1%" in customer satisfaction in the category of training organizations.

Topic Description: The vast majority of people go to work intending to do a good job, but unfortunately far too often they find themselves in a business culture that discourages them from doing so. Take Responsibility for your Business Culture will show you how to: 1) establish a healthy "social contract," 2) encourage front-line workers to become "emergent leaders" and 3) empower workers to deliver "customer value."

Meet your 2011 MCBA Board of Directors
It is a new year, and the MCBA has a new board. Below are some quick bios about your new board members. The board met in December and selected their officers for 2011.

Theresa Poalucci, President
Bridgette Barrington, Vice President
Bill Temple, Treasurer
Sue McNeely, Secretary

Theresa Poalucci - Theresa has spent the past 37 years in the publications and advertising business, first as the editor and production manager, and then eventually as the publisher of the Journal Newspapers. She owns the Journal Media Group along with her brother and partner Greg Harris. The two have grown the circulation of the Journal Newspapers, the company's core product, to cover 13 communities between downtown Seattle and downtown Everett. They have also branched into publishing directories, maps, festival programs, magazines, and a variety of design work, including web work and social media marketing.

Theresa lives in Mill Creek and has served on the Mill Creek Festival committee ever since she joined MCBA, eventually chairing the committee for a number of years. This past year she served as a Member-at-Large on the MCBA Board. She has been an active participant in the festival's growth.

A great believer in giving back to the community, the Journal Media Group is known for donating marketing to local charitable organizations. Theresa is a Lynnwood Rotarian and is serving as Past President this year. She also serves as the PR Chair for Rotary District 5030, with 55 clubs.

Theresa's experience with local chambers is extensive. In addition to her work with MCBA, she currently serves on the board of the South Snohomish County Chamber of Commerce, Edmonds Chamber of Commerce, and as President of the Northgate Chamber of Commerce (a position she has held for the past three years). Theresa serves as President of the Edmonds Chamber Foundation, which helps to fund community events such as the 4th of July, and she is on a marketing advisory board for a local theater.

Bridget Barrington - Bridget has over 18 years of banking experience. For the past four years Bridget has managed both the Mill Creek and Silver Firs Office of People's Bank. As Branch Manager, Bridget is responsible for branch operations and business development.

Bridget is an active member of the Mill Creek Town Center Association and has served on the board of the Mill Creek Business Association for two years. Bridget is responsible for the Speaker Programs as a Mill Creek Rotarian and is a former volunteer at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Bridget's experience and personal involvement in her community are perfect examples the higher level of service you will find at Peoples.

Bill Temple - Bill Temple has served as the treasurer of the MCBA for more than half a dozen years. He managed the Frontier Bank branch in Mill Creek for 11 years, until they were recently purchased and spent a total of 36 years in the banking industry.

Bill and his wife are avid world travelers, but when he is home his favorite place to be is in the garden. His other endeavors include serving as a board member for the Lynnwood Kiwanis Club's Kiwanis House, which provides a home for homeless women and their children.

Sue McNeely - Sue and her husband Dan own Northcreek Roofing and have been huge supporters of the Mill Creek Business Association.

Northcreek Roofing has been a member of the association for about 6 years and during that time we has enjoyed networking with and being part of the Mill Creek Business Community. Sue has served as a  Mill Creek Festival committee member for the last 6 years and North Creek Roofing has sponsored the festival for the last number of years.  She is also an active member in the Bothell Chamber of Commerce, Master Builders, BBB and Western Washington Roofing Association.

Rosemary made it to Mill Creek via Wall Street where her business experience was in general contracting, engineering and business research. Her understanding of the entrepreneurial spirit comes first hand as a small business owner and electrical contractor for 10 years in Mill Creek. Today she is the Operations Manager at The Donaldson Clinic, Mill Creek - a position she has held for the past 21 years.

Because of her knowledge and experience, Rosemary takes pleasure in acting as a business mentor for start-up businesses in the greater Mill Creek area.

Kevin Giboney - Kevin has been a member of the MCBA since 2005 when he purchased his first Allstate agency in Mill Creek. This will be his third year on the board, having served on several committees including the scholarship, membership and festival committees. Kevin and his business partner, Dave Keen, form the team of Just 2 Dads, operating three Allstate Insurance and Financial Service Agencies in Mill Creek, Lynnwood and Mountlake Terrace. Just2Dads is a value-based, family-orientated practice built on integrity, professionalism and a passion for making a difference. As trusted advisors, Kevin and Dave have made the commitment to "Protect Your Family As Our Own!," providing peace of mind and secure financial futures for one family at a time.

Prior to joining Allstate, Kevin spent 12 years as a financial analyst in the securities and investment banking arena.

He has over 20 years of management consulting experience with technology companies and has worked with several of the Fortune 50 in the United States, Europe and Asia. James provides financial, retirement and insurance educational services to clients, churches, non-profit organizations and small businesses. He assists individuals, as well as organizations, in reaching their financial goals.

Dr. Nancy Morgan - Nancy, the newest member of the Board, and one of the oldest, served on the MCBA Board from 2004 through 2009, took a year off and is now re-joining her fellow Board members. In the meantime, however, she continued to chair the MCBA scholarship committee.

She was born and raised in Seattle, Washington, attended WSU for undergraduate school and then the UW for Medical School. There she met Robert Morgan, whom she married in 1978. With the exception of an eight year sailing trip halfway around the world, they have practiced medicine together ever since. Together, they opened Guardian Family Care in Mill Creek in 2001. Their practice is small but very personal and they would love to have MCBA members stop by and get acquainted with their unique style of practice.

Bill Raynolds - Bill's horticultural roots go all the way back to his four-square-foot garden in Ghana, West Africa. From age 5 to 9 he was fascinated with the way small seeds would erupt into towering plants. This connection to world flora continued during his prep school years at Haverford School when he worked in a Philadelphia nursery to help pay tuition.

Bill graduated from Grinnell College in 1979 with a BA in English. A 25-year career in Asian international banking culminated in an executive management position in a Russian bank in Moscow. Bill assisted in bringing credit products (credit cards, mortgages, commercial leases) to the Russian banking market for the first time in history.

After successfully launching credit in Russia, Bill returned to the US for a role as Chief Operating Officer at a New York based investment bank. Bill managed all operating aspects of the investment bank's operations until 2003 when he decided to embark on a cross-country bicycle adventure to raise funds for the Shackleton School. Somewhere part way across the plains of North Dakota Bill had an epiphany. While the work of international and investment banking had been exciting and financially fulfilling, something was missing. That something that was unfilled was his passion for plants and the nursery business. It was time to realize his dream of operating a garden center.

Rather than dive into this unknown industry and probably lose all his hard earned rubles, Bill decided to get some experience in the industry first. In 2004, Bill joined Molbak's, the premier nursery in Washington. Bill's first position at Molbak's was as a seasonal summer employee responsible for the most physically demanding, dirtiest, repetitive tasks at the nursery. Strangely enough, he loved it. Bill was retained as a full time employee and soon was promoted to Department Supervisor and then Department Manager for Garden and Indoor Plants. In Nov 2006, with this retail experience under his ever expanding belt, Bill succumbed to the entrepreneurial bug and launched My Garden Nursery.

My Garden Nursery recently won first place in "Evening Magazine's" BEST OF WESTERN WASHINGTON contest. In addition, My Garden was also named by Garden Center Magazine to its 2011 list of the "Revolutionary 100 Top Nurseries in the US."

Holiday Memories

2010 MCBA Holiday Party a Tough Act to Follow

Written by Bruce McLeod

The Association's annual Christmas party was Friday night, Dec. 3, at My Garden Nursery. Owners Bill Raynolds and Jenny Gunderson were amazing hosts. In addition to everything else he did, Bill served as our bartender. The holiday décor at the nursery was absolutely stunning and Bill and Jenny's gracious hospitality and warm staff truly made this first-ever evening version of the event one to remember. Guests frequently commented on the beautiful surroundings during the networking time and many of us took home gifts and decorations that night.

Kafé Neo and Costco provided outstanding hors d'oeuvres and desserts. Certainly no one went home hungry except by choice or incredible will power. More than 50 attendees enjoyed wonderful live holiday acoustic guitar music by Barry Pollack. All of this set the stage for some truly great networking and an excellent recap of the Association's year's activities by Chris Lindstrom of Ceptara.

Heidi Butz of Heidi's Place Custom Picture Framing and Kerri Kirschner of Acclaimed Photography did an outstanding job of designing the party layout. The event photos accompanying this article were also Kerri's. Response to the event was uniformly very good, so we're hoping for more of the same next year. This one will be a very tough act to follow!

Membership renewals are mailed and due!

All members should have received the new membership application for membership renewal for 2011. Please e-mail our board secretary Sue McNeely if you have not.

The new application also affords your company the opportunity to step up to a sponsorship. Sponsorship differentiates your company from competitors by highlighting your community partnership. It shows civic pride and responsibility while strengthening relationships with existing and potential customers, showcasing your services and products, and building brand familiarity for your company.

By aligning your company with specific events, such as the annual Mill Creek Festival, you make use of an effective marketing tool that accesses a wide range of audiences, including decision makers in business, government entities and customers.

Sponsorship that involves hospitality is especially effective, providing the advantage of exclusive networking opportunities like Chamber networking breakfasts and lunches, as well as after-hours events.

The MCBA board hopes you consider these new levels of commitment with your business association for 2011.

You may download the MCBA Membership Application and Benefits (83K .pdf).
