Arrow Outreach News
December, 2010  -  Volume 2010-III

Merry Christmas!

Our pastors in Ciudad Juárez are busy, busy, busy!!  The articles below will fill you in on all that is going on in the ministries that we support there.  The scholarship update is provided by Bernd Braun, our scholarship administrator.  The other 3 ministry updates are provided by Rich Mackey.

If you are looking for that last minute 2010 tax deduction, please consider the ministries of Arrow Outreach.  God is doing wondrous things through our pastors in Ciudad Juarez, but He calls on each of us to be His hands and feet and to provide the funds necessary to make His presence known to all.  There is a quick link to the left that will take you to the online donation section of our website, and there is a short article at the end of this newsletter that tells you a bit more about donating.

I hope that each of you has a wonderful Christmas season!  As you read this newsletter, think about what you can do to be a greater part of the various ministries of Arrow Outreach.

Merry Christmas!!

Scholarship Update

Last year, Arrow Outreach's Starfish Scholarship Program provided scholarships to 154 students for a total of $31,950.  This year, we have 183 students (19% increase) with a program funding requirement of $43,650 (37% increase).  We recently received a generous grant from North Park Presbyterian Church of Dallas, and so once again we are able to sponsor every child, something we've been able to do every year since the inception of this program!  We have 12 students in University, 42 in High School and 129 in Middle School.

You might ask why our funding requirement has increased significantly more than our number of students.  This is because of the great success of this program.  The majority of our students in Middle School are progressing on to High School and some go from there to University!  This is something that these families never before dreamed of happening, but something that is now a reality for them.  The costs of High School and University are quite a bit higher than those of Middle School, and so our scholarships are greater.

With all the violence that is happening in Ciudad Juárez, it is hard to imagine the difficult conditions faced by these students each day.  They need our support more than ever. The forecast next school year (2011-2012) is 204 students requiring $53,400.  So keep your donations for the Scholarship Program coming, allowing us to continue to sponsor all the children during the next school year.

New Buildings - JesusA New Interim Ministry for Pastor Jesus

Observing conditions in Juarez and especially in Pastor Jesus' colonia deteriorate and become more violent and deadly over the past 30 months, has been a painful story to watch unfold. We know that God is in charge, but actual events in front of one's eyes sometimes make it difficult to see the Lord at work. The faith of Pastor Jesus and Lety has held strong in the face of all this evil. The suspending of operations at Tocando Puertas in August and the halting of Church activities in early September were the low points.

Since that time the Lord has opened a door in the town of Sauzal, located four miles west of the Tocando Puertas Center. Pastor Jesus checked with us and we reviewed his new operational proposal and gave a green light at our September Arrow Board meeting to begin operations in Sauzal. The mayor of Sauzal gave Pastor Jesus use of two facilities. One, a building where he has reopened a clinic to that community and also is serving the elderly of the area with general health care and training. A second larger facility has become the home to the accelerated education program for kids ages first grade through High School. Classes are offered in English, computer training, math, social studies and arts and crafts. Adult classes are also being conducted in most of these disciplines. 70 adults weekly are in programs and 45 children are in the youth education programs.

Additionally the Feeding Program is serving roughly 300 hot meals per week and they are doing clothing distribution.

The operation at Tocando Puertas is on hold. The local drug gang that has been terrorizing the Loma Blanca region has apparently been chased from the area after their leader and several members were killed by one of the Cartels in a shootout across the street from Tocando Puertas. At the moment no other gang presence has returned. Pastor Jesus wants to wait until January to see if things quiet down and then if possible begin church services and activities again.

In the midst of a failing city, God is continuing to use Jesus and Lety to bring hope. When all of this works its way through, there may be two separate ministries in that area and God will have multiplied the ministry.

Rey de Gloria - God's Work Abounds

At the beginning of November I made my monthly visit to meet with Pastor Luis and his administrator, Jessica, at the Rey de Gloria complex, located 100 yards east of the Socorro Rivera School.  Many of you have worked and ministered at the church going back to 2003, when it was a 500 square foot little red wood frame building.

Being in a city under siege has not stopped the God-centered work carried out by Luis and his body of believers. The ministry has continued to reach out to the community through its church activities and many programs.   Currently they are maintaining their 200 hot meals six days per week and food distribution to local families through their food bank.   Their Children's' Home operation goes on with between 25 and 35 kids with no family support living at and being cared for in their Family Ministry Facility at the church.  Their Day Care Center for the Colonia has 50 children attend daily and they have 52 kids this year participating in our Arrow Starfish scholarship program.  In addition the church carries out ongoing repairs on homes in the Colonia and runs a full complement of outreaches to local families.

When I entered the church a month ago I was struck by the fact that there no longer was a wall between the sanctuary and the gym.   Pastor Luis explained to me that their Sunday service attendance had grown to 500 people and they needed more space to seat everyone.   In the midst of all the violence in the city, their church is standing strong and growing. At the end of our time together Pastor Luis shared the newest ministry beginning at Rey de Gloria, named "First Touch".   It is a ministry which will work with the children of parents who were killed in gang violence.  They will provide food, clothing, medical and counseling help and assistance with their schooling needs.   In some cases the children will move into the Children's Home.

Pastor Luis has often shared with me that they have only the Lord to call on for protection.   Luis and his congregation are allowing the Lord to use them as His providers and protectors for those that have nowhere else to turn.

Redencion
Update: Verdad y Redencion

The construction of the new Redencion church, funded by Dallas First Presbyterian, is moving forward. Right now it looks like the Dedication of the Building complex will take place at the end of June. Dallas First Presbyterian's Senior Pastor Joe Clifford, as well as Arrow Board member Liz Zsohar are planning on attending in addition to other representatives of First Church.

The building of this new facility which began in July of 2008 has taken place exclusively during the season of extreme violence in Juarez. This gift from the Lord will allow the 150 members of Redencion the ability to offer an expanded list of ministry outreaches to their community similar to those which have been functioning at the Toribeo Family Center since 2002.

Pastor Felipe Barandiaran, who has led the creation of the work at the Toribeo since 2003 has taken on the added responsibility of developing the community ministries at New Redencion. The menu of outreach ministries will begin hopefully by late spring or early summer and will include the following for both children and adults:

Continuance of a full complement of church services, Bible studies and youth activities:

  • English lessons
  • Computer training
  • Tutoring of students
  • Arts & Crafts training
  • Day Care center
  • Sewing instruction
  • Food distribution, and working on becoming a registered food bank
  • Medical assistance

As elsewhere in the city, our Arrow Partner ministries and churches are placing their full faith

in Christ and continuing to be the rock and witness to their communities.
