FOOD Joe Fortes Seafood and Chop House
I had the pleasure last week to go for a business dinner at one of my favorite restaurants in Vancouver, Joe Fortes! As usual the food, service and atmosphere were all wonderful. To start, we shared a variety of premium east and west coast oysters all amazingly fresh and served icy cold on the half shell with classic house cocktail sauce, horseradish and lemon ($2.05-$3.60 each) This was a great way to start and between the 3 of us I think we went through about 36 raw oysters. For the main course I had my usual (can't resist) Miso Marinated Sablefish, baby bok choy, mushrooms, ginger scallion butter & jasmine rice ($38.95) and worth every penny! My colleague had a New York Steak, garlic mashed potatoes, roasted carrots, cabernet jus ($33.95). He also added Chop House Onion Rings ($8.95). The steak was cooked to perfection and I did end up eating half of his onion rings which were delicious. My client, from out of town, had never been to Joe Fortes but from the moment we walked in he seemed to really enjoy his experience including his Ahi Tuna, grilled rare with pickled ginger butter ($35.95). If you want a sure winner for a business lunch or dinner,I highly recommend Joe Fortes Seafood and Chop House

WINE Marichel Vineyard 2009 Syrah I recently was given this beautiful BC Syrah and enjoyed it with my wife. Priced at $40 dollars it is on the pricey side but worth every penny. It is not yet available in Vancouver but I spoke to the wine maker and it will be in specialty stores soon. In fact he informed me that Legacy Liquor store at 1633 Manitoba St. carries their 2008 Syrah witch is close in flavour. http://www.legacyliquorstore.com/ Tasting Notes: The wine was aged for 18 months in a mixture of new and older French oak. Classic Syrah aromas flavours are framed by excellent structure and refined tannins. Drink with enjoyment now, or if you prefer, experience this premium wine after a decade or more of aging.
