WE'RE LAUNCHING A BK LILITH SALON!
MARCH 4TH AT 7:00 PM AT THE HOME OF MAGDA SCHALER-HAYNES
|
QUESTION: What's LILITH and what do you mean by a "SALON?"
ANSWER: For the past thirty five years, LILITH magazine has been charting
Jewish women's lives with affection, subversion and style. LILITH features
award-winning investigative reports, new rituals and celebrations, first-person accounts, both contemporary and historical, as well as entertainment reviews, fiction and poetry, art and photography.
LILITH is an independent publication, made possible through the support of individuals and foundations, which gives its writers and editors the freedom to not only be rigorous in exploring controversial issues, but also able to present new ideas and interpretations.

|
The articles are always so fascinating, that Jewish women around the world have been creating LILITH SALONS to get together in comfortable settings to talk about the current issue. Usually, one article per issue is featured for the discussion.
We will enjoy a pot luck nosh at each Salon.

QUESTION: Who is organizing this salon and why?
ANSWER: Shoshana Silberman, new member, Jewish educator and author, participated in a LILITH SALON in Princeton. She brought this idea to us thinking that a lively discussion group would be a perfect match for B'nai Keshet women. Lauren Meyer, chair of adult education, and Magda Schaler-Haynes, who for many years read and discussed Lilith articles with her beloved mother Renee who recently passed away, joined in planning the Salon. We hope to attract a diverse multi-generational group of women.
|
QUESTION: What kind of topics are discussed?
ANSWER: Here are just a small sample of topics found in issues of LILITH: JAP baiting on college campuses, works by "forgotten" women writers, analysis of infertility among Jewish women, reports on clergy abuse, women's philanthropy, body image and eating disorders, daughters on mothers, adopting children of other races, out of the closet and under the chuppah, family secrets, etc. QUESTION: Why name a magazine Lilith? ANSWER: According to Legend, Lilith was the Biblical Adam's first wife. She was tossed out of the Garden of Eden and demonized because she demanded "equality." What she demanded will be explained at our first gathering!
