American Jewish World Service Farm Bill Petition
If you were at BK this past Friday when Ruth Messinger, president of American Jewish World Service, spoke, you heard her impassioned plea for a change in the way the United States provides aid to countries facing food crises. Whether you were there or not, you have an opportunity to help AJWS make its voice heard in Congress as the 2012 Farm Bill is reviewed. This is a chance to reform our food aid policy so that we stop wasting food and undermining local farmers and markets in developing countries.

Darfurian Refugees Come to New Jersey - Volunteers Needed
Through efforts of the Jewish Vocational Service of MetroWest (JVS), we are proud to welcome 13 Darfurian refugees to MetroWest. These refugees have been able to come to New Jersey through a federal grant awarded to JVS through HIAS (Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society) to resettle twenty-five refugees per year over the next two years, or a total of fifty refugees from Darfur and neighboring areas in Sudan, Africa. To this end, JVS and the NJ Coalition Responds to the Crisis in Darfur are looking for assistance with the following:
- Volunteers to take refugees to doctors and other appointments (currently there are over 40 at this time).
- Male volunteers to become friends with the seven young men, who have each travelled alone to New Jersey, i.e. engage in social activities, become mentors, etc.
- Accompany refugees with tasks such as supermarket shopping, practicing English, and teaching literacy, nutrition and money management skills.
- Donate clothes, mattresses, food, and other initial housing and living essentials.
- Provide financial assistance to help the new refugees settle in apartments and to provide essentials such as food, clothing, and transportation.
