      Massage & The Mind-Body Connection

Have you ever noticed that how your body feels affects your state of mind and vice versa. If you're not feeling well you may be a little blue or cranky. When you're feeling on top of the world that nagging pain in your shoulder disappears. There is a strong connection between the mind and the body. So how we feel about ourselves and the people around us has a lot to do with our health. It's been said that happy people are healthy people. No one is happy all of the time. Life is stressful. A little stress can even be a good thing. But stress and constant tension can cause headaches and injuries. Massage can help release tight muscles and eliminate pain. It can also make us feel better emotionally. Touch affects not only the muscular system but also the nervous system which is why it influences how we feel. Those long slow strokes are so relaxing precisely because they are linked to the parasympthetic nervous system. It calms us down. Sometimes we need a massage to de-stress. Then we can take a breath and face the world and our problems from a different perspective. Other times we need a massage to work on tight muscles. Sometimes it takes a bit of both to make us feel better.
We also need to be aware that muscles have memory. Working on a muscle that has been constricted because of an injury, either physical or emotional can cause unsuspected feeling to arise. There my be a feeling of grief or a memory of something that was long forgotten. When this happens we can either express our feelings or quietly acknowledge them. It is important to work with an experienced and compassionate massage therapist. She should be someone you trust.

Massage not only makes you feel better, it helps you to listen. This allows you to get to know yourself better and to make choices about how you want to respond to those signals from your mind-body.

So take a deep breath and make an appointment to get a massage. You'll be glad you did.
