Healthy Lunches - Toxic Containers
One thing I really love about summer is the food. Fresh tomatoes and peaches - yummm! I love poking around farmers markets and going berry picking. It's fun and it's healthy. Once Labor Day comes summer may be officially over but the markets are still filled with great fruits and veggies well into the fall. Eventually I'll swap out berry picking for apple picking. Don't forget about all that wonderful food when you're making dinners, lunches and snacks. Packing healthy lunches for your kids to take to school or for you to take to the office is economical and healthy; however you don't want to put good healthy food into toxic containers. Even the snacks you pack when you take your toddler to the park should be in a nontoxic container. Toxins leeching from plastics into food is not good. Also, there is the environment to consider. According to the EPA, brown bag lunches for one child produces 67 pounds of waste a year. That's a lot of waste! Even if you don't have kids, think how many plastic baggies you use; probably a lot.
Many of us have switches from plastic water bottles to stainless steel which is a better choice. Reusable food bags and wraps are the perfect alternative to disposable baggies and plastic wrap. When buying plastic it's a good idea to look at the number. You want your plastics to be lead-free and PVC free. All plastics have a little number inside a triangle. This indicates the type of plastic and the level of toxicity. What you should know about plastic: Plastics to avoid: 3, 6, 7 Safer plastics are: 1, 2, 4, 5
