Greetings!
Is your bedroom cluttered and disorganized preventing you from getting a good night's sleep? In this week's newsletter I am going to share with you 6 Tips on how to turn your BR into a restful sanctuary.
By the way, on Saturday, March 26th, I will be giving a talk at IKEA Brooklyn. Join me and fellow NAPO-NY members, Lisa Zaslow and Dawn Falcone for "Fresh Start Bedroom Makeovers". It is a FREE event and you will walk away with tons of great information. Click here for details and directions.
6 Tips to Turn Your Bedroom Into a Restful Sanctuary
Take time to straighten up in the morning. Tidying up your bedroom in the morning sets the tone for the entire day. A rumpled bed, a rumpled day. It only takes 3 minutes to make the bed, so make sure to take the time to incorporate this daily discipline into your morning routine - after your shower and before breakfast for example. Pick up any clothes and books off the floor. Take things out of your bedroom, like children's toys, that belong in other rooms. Hang up clean clothes. Put laundry in the hamper.
Create a restful and inviting bed. Are your sheets mismatched, torn, threadbare? Are you still living with hand me down sheets from your parents? Get rid of them! Buy yourself beautiful sheets - satin, flannel, 2000 count Egyptian cotton - however you define beautiful. You'll be surprised at what a difference it makes. Make sure to wash the sheets well before putting them on your bed. Invest in a great comforter and mattress pad, maybe even a featherbed. You'll sleep like a baby!
Keep work out of the bedroom. Working in the bedroom will affect your sleep and ability to relax. A client of mine threw himself into his work after his divorce. He turned a walk-in closet in his bedroom into an office where he was working till all hours of the night. The first thing we did was move his office out of the bedroom and into the dining alcove, all the way on the other side of the apartment. His new home office is bright, spacious and overlooks Central Park - priceless! He now works better and sleeps better. His business has expanded and he is dating again! I'm telling you, organizing can be life changing.
Use a hamper that supports your laundry style. If you keep a hamper in the bedroom or nearby, use one that works with you not against you. For example - a client of mine who is an avid athlete would toss his laundry across the room like a basketball where it would pile up in a corner. We went on a shopping trip and chose an open chrome hamper for him. We placed it - you guessed it, in the corner where the pile of dirty laundry already lived. So now when he shoots hoops with his gym shorts, getting them into the hamper will be a slam dunk!
Group like items - a place for everything, everything in its place. Is the floor by your bedside covered with books and magazines? Use a decorative basket to keep books and magazines organized and easy to reach. Do you like to end your day with late night TV? Use a basket for the remote controls. Tidying up will be a breeze when you have a designated place for things you use often.
Add multi-purpose storage. A storage bench at the foot of the bed is a great way to store your linens, comforters, pajamas or out of season clothing. It also functions beautifully as an informal seating area. A storage bench is also a great place to put boxes of keepsakes and mementos, sort of like a personal treasure chest. An ottoman also offers additional seating and storage - an ideal spot for putting on and taking off your shoes or just kicking up your heels in a comfy chair for some reading. _____________________________________________________
