SYNERGY SPECTRUM
Educating Students in South Los Angeles

Greetings!
Volunteer Jeremy

Happy Valentine's Day and Happy Early St. Patrick's Day from Synergy Academies!

Many exciting doors have opened up recently for Synergy, one of which you will read about below in "Synergy Goes to Washington," and we invite you to help make these possibilities a reality.  Therefore, as you plan for another year of holidays and birthdays, please consider donating to Synergy as a creative way to celebrate a special occasion.

When former Synergy Volunteer Jeremy Zechar (shown above with a Synergy student) got engaged to his fiancĂ©e, instead of asking for wedding gifts, they asked their friends and family to donate to Synergy on their behalf.  This was a complete surprise to Synergy, and we are forever grateful for their generosity!

As you may already know, since Synergy's schools are public schools, our schools' budgets are significantly affected by California's budget crisis.  This is why we appreciate your support in order to continue to provide exceptional educational opportunities for our underprivileged students in South Los Angeles!

We're all in this together,

The Synergy Academies Family
Synergy Goes to Washington

We are pleased to announce that Synergy Kinetic Academy has been selected to receive a $12,500 grant from the Skirball Foundation to help send 25 Synergy students to Washington, D.C. this May.  Our students will participate in the Close Up Foundation's 5-day middle school program where they will learn about our nation's capital.

This will be Synergy's first cross-country field trip.  This will also be the first time most of these students will be away from home, will ride on an airplane, and will visit Washington, D.C.

In order to make this trip a reality, our school must raise the remaining $1,000 per student ($25,000 total).  If just 250 people donated $100 each, not only will we reach our goal, but we will also contribute to the development of America's future leaders. So, please make your donation online today!

Synergy's First Shakey's Pizza Fundraiser is a Success
Special thanks to everyone who attended or donated to Synergy's fundraiser at the East Los Angeles Shakey's Pizza on February 11th.

Since this was our first Shakey's Pizza fundraiser, we had a little corner reserved for our school, but we ended up filling the entire restaurant!

Thanks to the great turnout, we raised $700 in just three hours! This is enough money to pay for a local field trip for 100 students.

If you weren't able to attend, we will keep you posted about our next event.

"Reading is the Way Up" Comes to Synergy
Reading ScholarsAs part of the "Reading is the Way Up" campaign over the holiday season, City National Bank joined forces with Barnes & Noble to collect donated children's books for local schools.

Synergy is honored that it is one of the recipients of the books that were donated to the Barnes & Noble store at The Grove.  The books will be presented by City National Bank and the "Reading is the Way Up" mascot at our elementary school campus on February 17th.

Since Synergy's schools are located in South Los Angeles, there are no bookstores in the immediate community for our students and their families to purchase quality books for their homes.  Thanks to City National Bank and Barnes & Noble, the donated books will help fill a vital need for developing a love of reading among inner-city children and their families.

Even though the holiday book drive is now over, you can still make an online financial contribution to Synergy to help us provide books for our schools year-round.  Or download a contribution form and mail it with your check.

Synergy Academies is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization and contributions are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
UCLA Partners with Synergy in Net Impact Challenge
UCLAFor the next two weeks, a group of UCLA MBA students will be assisting Synergy with its plans to expand from two to three campuses.

The UCLA students are volunteering their time as part of the UCLA Anderson Net Impact Consulting Challenge (NICC).  Teams of MBA students are paired with local non-profit agencies, and they have two weeks to provide recommendations to their non-profit organizations regarding issues specific to each organization.

Synergy looks forward to working with its UCLA team and seeing the different teams' final presentations on Saturday, February 27th.  We know that this partnership will help us move one step closer to making our dream of creating a K-12 professional development school a reality.

Learn more about Synergy's K-12 professional development school model under Help Transform the American Public Education System in the December 2009/January 2010 issue of Synergy Spectrum.
