Bible

Cornelius answered: "Four days ago I was in my house praying at this hour, at three in the afternoon. Suddenly a man in shining clothes stood before me and said, 'Cornelius, God has heard your prayer and remembered your gifts to the poor. Send to Joppa for Simon who is called Peter....'  So I sent for you immediately, and it was good of you to come ... Then Peter began to speak: "I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism....                                                       -- Acts 10:30-34

50-plus Potluck Fun

Are you looking for an opportunity to invite a friend to church? Well, don't wait until Sunday. The 50-plus Potluck is taking place this Friday, September 23, at 6:30 p.m. Join us in Room 6 for a varied feast and wonderful time of fellowship--and introduce your guest to the welcoming love of Jesus and our church family. In addition to lots of food, we often have games, sing hymns, and give testimonies. Bring the following based on your last name: A-E Main dish, F-N Salad, O-Z Dessert. If you have questions, contact Lynn Sisler. And if you're not able to come this time, you can plan ahead for the next get-together on December 16.

See You At the Pole 2011CONNECT to God's Family

See you at the
Flag Pole

Next Wednesday, September 28, is the global day of student prayer. Teens from all over the world will CONVERGE at their school's flag pole to join in prayer for friends, school, city, and nation. This is a great opportunity to "Join the Movement!" Encourage your teens to show their faith by meeting at their school flag poles at 7 a.m. on the 28th. Check it out at www.syatp.org. CONVERGE is this year's theme, based on God's promise in Matthew 18:20: "Whenever two or three of you are gathered together in my name, I am there with you."

Praying with Purpose

Praying seems easy -- isn't it simply talking regularly to our heavenly Father? But as easy as it sounds, we can often drift into a pattern of requesting our current "gimme list." Instead, we want to have a two-way relationship with our Father, Savior, and Counselor. If you're a reader and would like to explore prayer in more depth, we have put together a list of several good books:

Praying the Names of God, by Ann Spangler (to help us know who God is in every situation)

Fresh Encounters, by Daniel Henderson (understanding how to pray both individually and in groups)

The Prayer Saturated Church, by Cheryl Sacks(understanding prayer's place in ministry and the church)

The Beginner's Guide to Intercession, by Dutch Sheets (when we need to pray fervently and specifically for someone)

If you'd rather participate in a class or workshop, we may be forming one where you can ask questions, practice, and embrace four key aspects of learning to pray. Please let us know that you're interested by sending a quick message to Laura Crouch.

Sunday Help Needed

Help is needed on a regular basis for the following ministries:

Chair Setup -- Volunteers are needed who will commit to helping two days every couple of months for one full year. With just a few volunteers now, the work takes much time and effort, but many hands make the work light! Especially needed is chair setup for Crossroads on Sunday evenings. You must be able to lift chairs off stacks 7 feet in height, work independently, and be flexible as events are scheduled at church. E-mail Franklin (best way) or call (916) 761-4338 if you can help in this vital ministry.

Sunday Morning Hospitality -- Are you enjoying the nourishment and variety of treats offered between services by our hospitality team? There is always a need for more hands to help serve in the kitchen. Or if you can add your own homemade baked goods or other tasty gifts to our fare of cookies, cupcakes, egg dishes, fruits, bagels and more, they will be gratefully received! If you are feeling called to help in this ministry, one Sunday a month is all we ask. Please contact Tiffani DeLange.

Food Pantry Donations -- Thank you for all your faithfulness in donating to our Food Pantry. Some items are running low, and the pantry could use regular donations of the following: chicken or tuna prepared dinners and the canned meat to go with those; cereals, pancake mix, and pancake syrup; peanut butter; and canned fruits.
