Originally a NY native, I relocated to Los Angeles, CA in 2008 after being signed to BLOC talent agency. I strive to take risks and be more then just another choreographer, actor or dancer. I want to be different. I want to be ME! All you have in life is this moment, this second, this NOW. So why waste it playing it safe.

I encourage every artist to embrace your inner gift and JUST LIVE. When you LIVE completely in the NOW. It is an amazing experience.

My resume includes

WATCH THE 2010 CAST BE CAPTURED WITH DANCEPLUG

Read what some of the 2010 Monsters Cast had to say about their experience. BE INSPIRED!

It was an HONOR to be a Monster. Even on the best of jobs, its rare to have the opportunity to work with a handful of top-industry choreographers like that. It is A LOT of work that involves all day/night rehearsals every day for almost a week and a half. It puts you through the toughest challenges physically and mentally. All in all, you love it every second you're there because its one of the greatest experiences you can have as a dancer!
- Alex Fetbroth

"Being part of the Monsters of Hip Hop Show, as well as the ability to call myself a Monster is such an honor. The experience was nothing less than amazing and unforgettable. Working with the industry's top choreographers is not something that happens very often so the most important thing to me was working 110% at all times, and soaking up as much knowledge as possible. The rehearsals are long and physically and mentally draining but your cast becomes your family and you are all there for each other at all times. When it comes down to it you love every moment, and the whole experience is something you will NEVER forget, because you are finally a MONSTER"
- Kaili Bright

Becoming a Monster has always been one of my biggest goals - and now greatest achievements.  There is nowhere else that you'll find this caliber of talent in the dance industry.  Of course the road to becoming to a Monster was challenging and hard work, but the end result was more than worth it.  The people that I met and the relationships that I built through my experience as a Monster have been priceless.  I am so honored to have had the opportunity to work with such exceptionally talented and professional artists.
- Dalphe Morantus

This year's theme was based around a science lab. The crazy, Dana Wilson, played the mad scientist and was cracking everyone up the entire night. Her character's mission was to "collect the necessary qualities to create the ultimate group of Monsters." and Dana committed to the role 100%. The audience watched as the mad scientist experimented with her subjects through numerous exercises such as THE ENDURANCE EVALUATION, GROOVE DISCOVERY, CONTROL, DETERMINATION, VERSATILITY, SYSTEM REBOOT, IMAGINATION, RAWNESS, SPEED and FORBIDDEN ELIXIR. All with the help of her lab technicians, aka The 2010 Monsters of Contemporary.

The creativity behind the show was simply brilliant. The way the 2010 cast was introduced one by one was hot! They each contained a video diary, where the word of the day was "passion" and then received a 30 second spotlight, to show off their moves,  but the Monsters of Contemporary introductions were even more creative. They each entered the stage, by pressing their hand on a big screen TV, aka the lab computer and logged in as technicians. There faces popped up with all their information. The 6 contemporary dancers then performed a heart felt number, which was choreographed by Peter Chu.

The experiments revealed numerous conclusions. ENDURANCE proved that girls last longer then the boys in a beastly piece by Laura Edwards, DETERMINATION concluded that the males have the heart to see the 8 miles through and that a woman, Teresa Espinosa, can choreograph a routine that screamed testosterone, SYSTEM REBOT resulted in the contemporary technicians of all different sizes and shapes dancing with the brilliant Matt Cady, IMAGINATION transformed Matt into a little boy, Dana Vons, working his swag out at 9 years old? to R. Kelly's "Bump 'N' Grind" with his love interest, Marti Weinstein, RAWNESS resulted in 16 year old, Kaili Bright, leading a pack of 7 men hard as ever to a Luther Brown piece,  VISION seeped into the past with a top notch performance from numerous Monster alums choreographed by Candace Brown (2009 cast) and Tony Czar (2006 Cast), TENDERNESS proved that a hard working woman needs love too, when wacky scientist, Dana Wilson got her groove on with her lover, Marty Kudelka, after hours and INDIFFERENCE made evident the seriousness of messing with Rhapsody's "Siren Assassin".

Monsters of Hip Hop is a home for every dancer who wants to commit to their passion. If you have never taken class with the Monsters faculty then you need too! It's worth the expense. Check out the website now to see when the tour is visiting your state and be sure to attend the next Monster show in August 2010 if you are in the CA area.

"The message that we want to give to the cast this year is to enjoy every moment." - Becky Funk
Behind The Moves with... Andy Funk
The Monsters of Hip Hop Show
andy
1. How many years have you been doing the Monster Show at The El Portal Theater? Has it always been there? How did you and Becky come up with the idea?
"We just produced our 6th show (2010), always at the El Portal Theater.  We wanted to expand on the career opportunities we were providing through the convention, which at the time, included introduction to agents and influential choreographers and class scholarships (to Millennium, Debbie Reynolds, The Ailey Extension.  Becky has always wanted to produce a Broadway show and so we decided to take the typical "convention scholarship" award to a whole new level.  We threw the idea out to some of the faculty and they loved it.  For them, they saw working with the country's top hip hop dancers in a full-length, Broadway-style show would be both a new challenge and very rewarding.  Our goal with the show, was to provide additional opportunities for aspiring dancers to be discovered and also to showcase our incredible faculty.  The countless success stories of Monsters Show alumni, and even faculty members makes The Monsters Show one of the most powerful events in the industry"

2. How do you select your cast of dancers each year for the show? How many days do the dancers have to learn the routines? How many numbers did they learn for the 2010 show?
"In each Monsters convention city, 4 dancers are selected by the faculty member teaching the audition class to receive a VIP tour pass.  This enables them to attend unlimited conventions free for a year.  Finalists are videotaped at the conclusion of the weekend and then at the end of the tour, the faculty get together to review all of the audition footage.  They narrow dozens of finalists down to a cast of about 14.  The Show process is incredibly intense.  They meet for the first time a little less than 2 weeks prior to showtime.  They rehearse sometimes 16 hours a day for about 2 weeks before opening night.  This year, the cast learned about 10-12 numbers, including 7 in the first three days of rehearsal!"

3. Every year Tabitha & Napoleon are SO creative with the show? How long have they been producing & writing the show? What made you hire them?
"When we first approached the faculty with the idea for the show, everyone was excited and interested in participating, but Tabitha & Napoleon also stepped up to write and direct the first show. Since then, they have been as involved as possible, with a number of other amazing choreographers stepping in when they were not as available.  Other choreographers like Kevin Maher, Tony Testa, Rhapsody and this year, David Moore, took on a more-involved role in either writing or directing the show.  We're very fortunate to have the support of so many creative and talented choreographers
/directors to pull from. Obviously, Tabitha & Napoleon are amazingly creative and fun to work with, and have incredible vision to carry through our mission.  They all do really!  I would be remiss if I did not also give proper credit to Becky who Co-Directed this year's show.  She has been deeply involved in each show but made it official this year, by reluctantly agreeing to have her name added to the directing credits.   She is a lot more creative and talented than she takes credit for."

4. How many states does the monsters tour visit? How was your first time in the lovely Cancun, Mexico?
"We typically visit 16-25 cities per year with our convention and numerous others with master classes and other corporate/industrial bookings.  Going into our 7th year, we decided to schedule at least one vacation-type of destination per year.  It started with a master class workshop in beautiful New Zealand.  From there, we booked Cancun and next year, we are planning "Sea Monsters", a Caribbean dance convention cruise!  Details will be forthcoming but so far the response has been overwhelming!  Due to space limitations on the ship, we may only be able to accommodate about 100 dancers but it's going to be incredible.  We've found that each city feels more and more like a family reunion, so we figured why not take the family on a relaxing and exciting cruise!"

5. Everyone always says Monsters is a family! Do you stay in close contact with alumni or plan events to bring cast members together?
"Monsters is a family by design but also by nature I think.  The environment at our events is very open and supportive that dancers can't help but make friends and long-term relationships.  From the parents and teachers to our faculty and show alumni, once people experience Monsters, I believe (or at least I hope) they feel like part of the bunch!  Our faculty have all bought into our environment and expectations as well.  As renowned and recognizable as they are, our faculty all remain approachable and true role models to all of our attendees."

ONE BY ONE viewers will learn the history behind every sultry vixen at CINESPACE in Hollywood, CA on Wednesday nights during the months of August, September and October 2010.

"I've always had the stories of the Sirens, but in the big production I could never get so deep with their stories due to show length. So I decided to make a show series that people can attach themselves to. Something that they can compare to their favorite episode on TV. There is so much to tell with a Siren. The story will never end.
" -Rhapsody James

On August 18, 2010, eyes witnessed the tale of the first 3 recruits, LOLA, DAISY and VENOM. The way the stories unfolded inside the intimate CINESPACE theater was very entertaining. It was night and day from the lavish Avalon and that was the point. The audience was inside the story. Numerous characters, including agents, assassins, jealous girlfriends, drunk rockers continued to appear throughout the theater and if they weren't dominating the small stage, then they were dancing right off your shoulder. Rhapsody's choreography was brilliant. The way she connected her movements and the entire theater with the storyline, left everyone antsy to attend the next chronicle.

"I wanted to create a lounge vibe of Siren Assassins, so this way people can feel closer to the show. I wanted to create something that people can come see all the time. Something that was fresh and intimate. Everything doesn't always have to be so over the top. I want the audience to feel the Sirens not just see them from a far." -Rhapsody James

After a high adrenaline promo video played on the big screen, the crowd became hyped. Everyone was excited to be reunited with the dangerous assassins they met in March 2010 at club Avalon. The night began with 6 male agents, with red ties, sneaking through the crowd to report to duty. After they united with a hard hitting routine, they collected their files and searched for their targets. Onyx, THE BOSS, sent her men after these women with detailed records about their whereabouts. The rule was, there were no rules. Capture the destined assassin and don't take "NO" for an answer. My favorite moment was a rock step where the boys were in a pyramid with sunglasses on and agents like, Derrell Bullock, smoothly popped his shoulder. It was sick!

Ruby Red Daisy, the rebel, played by Katie Berenson, was the first assignment. Three screaming friends came out looking for the crazy blond. When Daisy finally appeared, the ladies woke up the crowd with a hot count of 8, whipping their heads around in a clump in the back of the theater. The crowd ate it up! Katie earned her role as the blond rebel assassin, Daisy. She hit her moves hard, was sexy and even worked it out in leather. All the ladies were great, but Pamela Jean Smith, was fantastic with her booby shirt and tongue sticking out every 5 seconds. She screamed rocker and became Daisy's right hand woman. The agents' first attempt at grabbing Daisy was a bust, but the 2nd time did the trick. A female agent played on Daisy's lesbian side and distracted her long enough for the other agents to grab the feisty rebel and bring her back to Onyx.

Lola, "The Angel", played by Cat Rendic, was hysterical. Cat totally embraced the ruthless, unethical, slutty temptress who girls hate and men LOVE. A girl came through the crowd with her man and out of no where the character, Lola, steals him away. Cat sexed him up on stage, while the girlfriend is screaming through the crowd, wanting to beat the crap out her. Later on the girlfriend comes back out, with martini glass, drunk and upset over her boyfriends wandering eyes. The best was when Lola grabbed the glass and threw it in the enraged girlfriend's face. It was great! Cat worked the hell out of her hair and hit every move sexy, smooth and sharp. Tony Czar, was the agent to capture the character Lola. He manipulated her at her own game by letting her seduce him and then on the last 3 beats he put her arms behind her back. It was hot!

The final assignment for the evening was to capture Venom, "The Housewife", played by Janelle Cambridge. The set up was great! A jumbo screen played clips of some of the strongest black mothers in television history, like Clair Huxtable, while a lonely housewife sat on the couch in leopard lingerie, clicking her remote away in the dark. Janelle was great in this role and expressed the power of a strong black female. She LIVED it up in her orange heels, eager to surprise her hubby, until a girl pops in and said "Excuse me, did somebody call Sean?". Next thing you know the girl was tied and gagged and the character Venom danced around her without a care in the world and soon the agents snagged her.

Ever storyline was different, every character was unique and every lead was "ON". Rhapsody is a woman of vision, passion and power. You can't help, but to love her and her work. I'm excited to see all the other chronicles and become familiar again with each assassin.

ERICA SOBOL'S: "BlinkLDream"

carey yasis
Erica Sobol's show, "BlinkLdreams", on August 19th, 2010 at The Music Box in Hollywood, CA was simply magical. Her company, CollideEdance, had heart, soul, earth and just plain realness. Broke dancers knew they got their money's worth right from the start, with an incredible pre-show, by singer, Nina Storey. The second she hit her first note, the entire theater woke up. She was AAAMAAAZING!!! It was the perfect way to start the night. This article would be a mile long if I really went into complete detail, but the spunky red head has a unique voice that is Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone and Christina Aguilera all mixed into one. The score, her voice, the band, the crisp sound system in The Music Box theater, the unpredictable moments in every song: it was just so professional and well rehearsed. How many up & coming singers do you know that can sing acapella and not have ONE bad note? It was music at it's best and truly an unforgettable experience. When Nina Storey wins her Grammy in the future, I won't be shocked.

"I didn't realize my music impacted the dance community so much, until it was used on So You Think You Can Dance" and then used again and again. I have such admiration for dancers. You guys are such beautiful people. I am really excited about the music video coming out called "Waiting For Love". Erica (Sobol) choreographed it and she had me flying in the air." -Nina Storey

......BUT NOW BACK TO THE SHOW! It was sick! Erica set it up where every individually themed piece flowed right after the next. Every dancer offered something different to Erica's bowl of creativity and each shined individually throughout the show. From 6 males being Lovestruck and expressing their feelings beautifully, to Lindsay Lancaster rolling her face down Travis Cooper's body as it arched, to Morgan Burke nailing 8 pirouettes with a flexed foot in a "Sloppy" male environment,  to Ally Riddle commanding her sexy "Electric Feel" in neon shorts, to Reika Ando doing a ridiculousness back bend to the floor, while she controlled hitting 2 base beats with her arms, to hip hop dancers Sohey Sugihara and Kristin Lorello proving in a duet that they are also technically trained, to Leah Moyer's insane musicality in her solo, to Maygen Nicholson rocking the hell out of her body and "letting loose the horses". The entire CollideEdance company is a fabulous diverse group of dancers through talent, style & even race.

I would love to discuss each piece individually, because every single piece was perfect and moving, but I thought listing a Top 5 would be more productive.

5. "Sloppy"
4. "Stupid" - Solo by Leah Moyer
3. "In the Darkness"
2. "Where is The Line" - Duet by Sohey Sugihara & Kristin Lorello

#1. "Kingdom Underground"
I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this piece. It was so organic and animalistic, which is my favorite style. Between the powerful song "Kingdom Underground" by Matt Duke and Erica Sobol's choreography, I entered a world full of royal imagination. CollidEdance member, Leah Moyer, played the queen, and her minions were everywhere: in the balcony, on stage, in the nooks within the theater walls, on the ledge and even in the aisles, all waiting on her command. The entire piece was breathtaking, but there were two specific moment that left me speechless. The first was when Travis Cooper went up to Morgan Burke while he was sleeping on the queen's lap. The king of contortions himself, Morgan, reacted with a silent "bark" through his movement. It was surreal! The second was at the end, when all of the CollidEdance animals were crawling and answering to the queen's commands through out the theater. During the last few counts, the entire cast shared in the same choreography at the same time, while Leah stood still on stage. It was insane! This was the piece I believe helped Erica Sobol jump from visionary to a future legend.

SPOTLIGHT
The Dynamic Duo:
Dana Wilson & Marty Kudelka

BLOC Talent

danamarty
Once Upon a Time.... there was a young technically trained dancer, named Dana Wilson, who attended a Monster of Hip Hop convention in her hometown of Denver, Colorado in 2004. She came in contact with someone she would eventually call her mentor, choreography partner and best friend. That man was Marty Kudelka! She instantly took to Marty's unique movement and found herself liking hip hop, a style of dance she has always admired, but to which she had little exposure. From there, the young teen, straight out of high school packed her bags and moved to Los Angeles, California in 2005. She continued to study as hard as she could by taking hundreds of classes. Through her dedication and perseverance, Dana has achieved dream opportunities in her career as a professional dancer, teaches for famed companies like NYCDA (New York City Dance Alliance) and has assisted some of the biggest choreographers today, including Wade Robson for Cirque De Sole, Tony Award winner, Andy Blankenbhueler, for "The Wiz" on Broadway and the legendary, Toni Basil. BUT the passionate dancer from Colorado never forgot the man who inspired her to step out of her comfort zone and has assisted Marty for the past 5 years.

Marty Kudelka, a well established choreographer, who moved to LA in 1999, paid his dues as a dancer first and has since made a name for himself, as an A-list choreographer.  His clients include Justin Timberlake, Pink, Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey. He accepted Dana into his small inner circle and trusted combining her talents and opinions with his vision. This led to Dana assisting on many projects, including the Justin Timberlake's FutureSex/ LoveSounds Tour, a music video for Korean pop artist, ELVA, numerous commercials and much more. The power duo has been popping up everywhere lately, for example they just debuted a piece on So You Think You Can Dance (Season 7), but few realize that only recently has Dana's title switched from choreographer's assistant to co- choreographer. This is a new journey for both of them and they are taking it all in stride, one laugh at a time.

On August 29th, 2010, Dana Wilson & Marty Kudleka met up with me at Starbucks in North Hollywood, CA for an interview. These two are one of most down to earth people in the business. I had a great time talking to them over coffee.

1. Marty how did you pick Dana as your assistant?
Marty: "At that point she had already turned into a sick dancer...she was already an amazing dancer before, but doing my stuff or other people who have new school hip hop kinda feel, Amazing...like BANANAS AMAZING, like holy sh*&%*t. It was really fast, because people get good, but it just all made sense. The first job for this ELVA, Korean artist, that we did...it wasn't a big glamorous job for myself or her, it was just kinda like "oh this will be cool". We didn't know if we could work together again."

Dana: "I took a LOT of class"

Marty: "But she's an exception to the rule. She intrigued me as far as somebody doing my stuff right as a female. It was just different."

2. How did you end up working together with the Justin Tour - Future, Sex, Love Tour?
Dana: "There were small gigs throughout the year, but it was the end of 2006, I was with you on a commercial and Justin (Timberlake) called you and said something to the effect of....."Yo, I'm finishing up an album, it's going to be sick. I'm ready to go on tour, are you down? Are you ready to go?" because I remember you hung up the phone and you were like: "Are you ready?" and I was like "What?" and you were like "J is going back on the road and I would love for you to help me" and I was like (sarcastically): "Yea I'll help out I guess, I don't know if I'm really free, will see" haha."

Marty: "That job was the first time that Dana, AJ Harpold and myself worked together. It was us 3 as one person. There was so many things to think about. We don't have enough time to explain, but so much goes into directing and choreographing a tour. Aj did all the day to day stuff and helps out with all the bands and background singers as well. Dana was part of my team for helping with the direction. More so that, then choreographically at that point." We were Team. Team "WOM" (Well Oiled Machine) we called it."

Dana: "He can't be in 13 places at once. I would know what our agenda was for the day, I would take the dancers aside. Teach them this, stage this, clean that, while he was talking about scrim cues, lighting and artistic stuff. AJ would be creating schedules and handing the business side. It was really very well delegated and we became an extension of him."

Marty: End of 2007 the tour was over, almost 2 years ago and since then it was a no brainier. Dana is my first option....period...over anyone as far as being a choreographer's assistant."

3. Choreography Duo, when did it start?
Dana: "It wasn't until this year that we really started collaborating choreographically, because it takes a while to develop a relationship assisting a choreographer. It wasn't even about a Marty thing, but it was a choreographer in general thing. I am young. I am a child. I have a lot to learn. So whether I was assisting him, Wade (Robson) or Tony Basil, for a long time I wouldn't say sh*&%* t. There is a line of respect of where I can say "Um I think maybe that doesn't feel so good maybe we could try this." Vs "No, try this move, my move is better." It is sensitive. It's just been 4 years working together and I know him. I know stylistically what you prefer and I'm able to make suggestions that would suite what he likes style wise."

Marty: "I think that's the biggest thing we want people to understand. 7-8 months ago, I was just getting my hunger back, because I didn't touch class for 2 years.  So I was just getting back in and I said (to Dana) "You know what? We never taught together, we never made anything up, we never went to a studio this whole time." So we picked a random R. Kelly "Bump N Grind" song and we choreographed together. I've done it with other people in the past, but it just doesn't work. With us, it was nasty.  She's very wise beyond her years. She's an old soul. I'm old. She's Young. I act young. She acts older.

Dana: "Haha. We balance."

Marty: "So that was literally the first time we ever made anything up together. Justin, ELVA, NO! That was the first time and the second time was this season on So You Think You Can Dance with Comfort & Jose. We don't want people to get the wrong idea and think they are now like a Tabitha & Napoleon. No! I still do my own thing and she's just coming up in the choreography gig. It was just a perfect thing to do it with Dana."

4. Marty you haven't done So You Think You Can Dance since Season 1? What made you do the show again for Season 7 with Dana?
Marty: "I did the first episode, the first season ever and this was my first time back. I really don't like all the politics that goes on with that show, so I wanted a great reason to come back. I thought she was the reason. That's huge! 27 million people hearing her name that she was one of the choreographers. I said unless we had power over everything, I'm not going to do it. At first it was just going to be just me, but I got diva and said in order for me to come back it has to be with Dana. I got Dana and the song I wanted. So it was cool."

Dana: "It was really intense. I think also us choreographing, as a team is very new, but me choreographing period, is very new. Right now it's difficult for me to consider myself a choreographer. When I meet someone for the first time, the first thing I say is that "I'm a dancer", because that's just what I have been doing for the past 20 years.  In my head I'm a dancer. I am just NOW getting to the point where choreographing is fun for me. It's always been something I have to work at and now I am getting pleasure out of the work that it takes to choreograph. As I am getting more comfortable with it, I am getting more comfortable with putting it together with Marty's style. Because of our relationship and I know how he creates, it was a LOT easier for me."

5. Your duet "Try a Little Tenderness" has been a huge hit. How did you come up with that idea?
Dana: "Elm invite Marty and I to Japan for the Boogiezone Workshop & Showcase and we decided to make something for the show. I had just seen Pretty in Pink for the first time 3 months ago, I know it's such a shame, but I fell in love with that scene in the record store. How he was singing and that song...I was like that's it! But Marty had to be ok with being theatrical, which isn't his comfort zone per say."

Marty: "No. Not at all"

Dana: "His style is very pedestrian and about being human, but now it was about telling a story. So we found the song, decided setting, plotted out the skeleton of dance, put the moves to it and then we performed it in Japan. People dug it and we were like WOW that felt really good. It was a double bonus."

Marty: "I'm glad Japan was the first time, because otherwise we probably wouldn't had done it. It had to be the perfect venue., Japan they are so into art no matter what as long as it's good. We did it in the Monsters of Hip Hop show, because one it fit into the story, without being two left. Ours was a breathe of fresh air to sit back and watch the OG's in the business after watching all the other dancers."

Dana: "In our relationship as choreographers where we are taking it right now is outside and much more then cool moves. But to get a story that moves you, that is what people are going to be drawn to next. I can watch 5000 moves on youtube at anytime of day, but to actually go see something, be moved emotionally, like that is what is next. "Evoke an emotion, because that's why dance happened in the first place."

Marty: "But the dance is now retired!"

6. Dana has paired up with several men for duets, including Sean Evaristo and Wade Robson, Marty why do you think she is the person everyone thinks to call?
Marty: "Because she's the TRUTH! That's big me saying that someone is the truth and she knows it, but I will break her back down later and say she ain't sh*#t...."

Dana: "haha"

Marty: ".....but she is the truth.  If your lucky to get one person and it need to be a guy and girl, she's the one. She's the chosen one."

The charismatic duo isn't done collaborating, they have a pot of ideas that will eventually spring to the surface, but timing and the gig is everything. When it feels right, they will deliver, but until then they each have a destined path that they must follow and have 100% support for each other to achieve all their dreams.Stay Tuned!

Last year, respected choreographers, Chonique Sneed & Lisette Bustamante, created a mo
vement to spread truth and reality to as many dancers as possible, for every stage of their career. It's called "Creating Opportunities". Once they formatted their vision and began to pitch it out, it was instantly picked up by Monsters of Hip Hop (Oct 2009) and Hollywood Dance Connection (January 2010), because both conventions believe 100% in the messages that Chonique & Lisette are offering the dance community & industry.

Now I know what your thinking: "That program isn't for me, it's for studio kids at conventions." Trust, I thought the same thing and it couldn't be farther from the truth. Creating Opportunities is perfect for anyone, regardless of age or level of achievements.

"It's about EVOLUTION! It's for everyone at every stage, because you have to continue to evolve."-Chonique Sneed

"It's More Than Moves" in so may ways. On top of numerous seminars throughout the country, it has also sprouted another division for goal oriented dancers who are seeking one on one attention. This is called The Elite Team! It is a 5 week program, with a 4 week curriculum, that finishes with a completion dinner, at Chonique or Lisette's house, on the 5th week. Graduates undergo a life changing experience and leave the course driven, informed, refreshed and ready to contribute all their talents to the dance & entertainment industry. Successful dancers/choreographers like Dana Wilson, Kenya Clay, Andye J., Leslie Scott, Gigi Torres, Aimee Winston and Candace Brown are all graduates of the Elite Team and rave about their experiences.

"The elite team has given me support and structure in an industry where there is very little. It is has helped me define and refine myself as a person AND as a product. It's how I will remember this year, and I will continue to make memories with the people who are a part of it for years to come." -Dana Wilson (Justin Timberlake/ featured artist this month)

Initially it makes you question: Why in the world would these accomplished forces, like Dana Wilson, want to do The Elite Team?" It's because they are still evolving as artists and seek guidance to face the next chapter of their dance career. BUT mixed in with these high profile names are the new kids on the block, the dancers who just moved into town, looking for an agent and working from scratch. The Elite Team doesn't discriminate! It seeks all applicants who really want to develop, aka "EVOLVE", as an artist. If that's YOU, then you need to submit today. apply @ creatingopps.com

The Elite Team has created quite a buzz in Hollywood right now, because everyone is seeking special attention from Chonique and Lisette. 16 people are chosen, 2 groups of 8 on Monday and Wednesday nights. Currently, team 3 & 4 are undergoing the intensive in Los Angeles, CA, but no worries New York, Lisette has relocated to make sure you receive love as well. The first New York elite team will begin the end of September 2010.

"We are creating a movement and in 5 years I'm excited to see what it will look like. Not across the country, but internationally." - Chonique Sneed

On August 17th, 2010 Chonique Sneed met up with me at Starbucks for an interview.
1. When did you start Creating Opportunities and Why?
"We have actually been mentoring for a while, because people are always asking us for personal couching, advice and to share our experiences, but Creating Opportunities was literally formed from us having a conversation, like this. It seemed like there was a leadership position that was missing in the Hollywood dance community and we decided to fill in the hole. We wanted to see how we could add a voice to it and reach everyone at once. It came from source literally. We did the work, moved on it and created the curriculum."

2. How did you come up with the curriculum for the Creating Opportunities?
"We just asked each other questions. What needs to be out there? What is some info that people aren't getting? What are some misinformation, myths, rumors that surface in the industry? We want to bring forth real information to wake up the people who are making excuses of why they don't get this or that.  When in actuality everyone is missing the point. The point is.... contributing to the community! NOT, what did I come out here to get out of the community. The more you contribute, the more you get, THAT IS HOW IT GOES. So now we have more people flying from all over the world to Hollywood to try to take a piece of the pie, opposed to people flying here to put something in. And that's what creating opportunities is about. Showing people how to put something in, not how to take something out. That's how you are going to get your job. That's how you book. People don't have that information, because you listen to myths. So it's a slow movement, but this first year is about AWARENESS for those who are unaware."

3. How did the Creating Opps. elite team start?
Some people wanted a lot more personal individualized coaching and we realized for that generation that is READY, SET, GO.....we want  to work individually with those people. There are some people who are ready to put in the work, make a difference and change NOW. We wanted to do a individualized coaching and guidance program that takes it to the next level and the stakes are a little bit higher, because now you have invested more. When the person is ready to invest more in themselves and risk more, those are kinda the first in line for the elite team. Everybody's timing is different, just because your ready now or later, does not make anybody better then or more fit then anybody else. It's just about timing and your timing is pre-destined. The only thing you can do is remove the blocks in front of you so that way you can get what is already predestined for you. The Elite team is about teaching people how to remove the road blocks in front of them. To get what's already predestined, but you have to be ready for that type of commitment, investment and intensity.

4. If you could list 5 things that a graduate of The Elite Team always leaves with after the 5 week course, what would it be?
"I would give you only ONE! A mirror. Everyone leaves seeing themselves in a new way. The Elite team is about leaving YOU differently. With the Elite team we give tools, so that way you can see yourself a different way and when you see yourself a different way then you can make different choices."

5. If you were to give advice to readers that want to apply for the program, what would be the #1 thing you would be looking for them to express to you.
"Who they Are. What their goals are. How serious they are. How passionate they are. How committed they are to themselves and their careers."

Thank God for email! I also caught up with Lisette Bustamante for an update on New York.

1. How is New York?
"New York is inspiring, fast, exhilarating and cultured...My inner artist is fed and so satisfied here...the city is filled with endless possibilities and every corner you turn you discover something or someone that makes you think, makes you laugh or makes your jaw drop...love it!!!!"

2. How does it feel to bring "Creating Opportunities" to there and start the first New York Elite Team?
"I'm really anticipating the Elite Team series in New York. There is a different thought process out here and a totally different drive. I think the New York community will really benefit from the techniques of Creating Opps...We're ready to bring some West Coast vibes and knowledge out here and learn more about this city through it!"
Happy 10th Anniversary
to Chonique & Lisette

Ten years ago, Chonique & Lisette, made a spontaneous decision as friends to create a piece for Carnival Choreographers Ball. That night the dynamic duo was approached by an agent and signed on the spot. The rest is history. Congratulation Chonique & Lisette on 10 years of explosive choreography, inspirational words and hundreds of achievements. You ladies are one of a kind and the dance industry is lucky to have you in it's corner. Much Love:)

Carnival on August 25th, 2010 had a couple great highlights: JJ Vallar's piece was original, creative and very cool! His dancer's wore suits that glowed in the dark and the audience experienced a fabulous light show full of dance moves. Peter Chu, had the incomparable Jillian Myers focus all her energy brilliantly around a lantern, Power Peralta had a killer duet with a crazy music mix, Greg Chapkis brought fire with his accents and brought "caution" to the stage; Ricky Cole & Audrey Benson did a killer Usher medley and expressed male to female attraction beautifully; Heavy Impact did their thing once again on stage, still going strong since ABDC; and Rock Steady Crew expressed the essence of hip hop culture through BBoxing, playing the flute, rap and 4 male dancers.

Through the help of Brian Thompson here is The Industry Voice Carnival Top 5! Enjoy Brian's amazing pics.

*The 5th spot was hard because Ricky Cole & Audrey Benson and Greg Chapkis were right on the cut off! They were AMAZING!

#1. Tucker Barkley

Watch Tucker's First Carnival on Youtube
This was Tucker Barkley's first Carnival piece. I know crazy right? Can you believe it? Tucker has worked with everyone and everything, but never put his work on the Carnival stage until now. It was BANANNAS! My friend Shiva Ware on the ride home stated: "I swear that boy is black." haha. The respect dancer delivered an all star cast to Diddy's "Bad Boys For Life" and DMX. It was ridiculous. Every dancer hit the moves hard with swag, intention and style. Laura Edwards, of course was the lady of choice, because she can stand up against any man with choreography. She rocked it along with the entire cast like Jacquel Knight, Ian Eastwood, Tony Czar, Sohey Sugihara, Derrel Bullock and several more. Congratulation to Tucker on an amazing Carnival debut.

WHAT'S NEW?

The Movement

1. Most people know you from running the dance & choreography division at DDO for 6 years. What made you step out and start your own business?
"It was by accident really. I was unsure about what I would do next. I had a few clients ask me to manage them and decided to "try it on" and eventually found that it was something I enjoyed. I also stared to see a need for what I was doing and how I was representing my talent. I decided to focus on choreographers and dance educators and soon realized that they were more than just "dance makers" and needed there careers to be handled in a very different way than they were used to. Eventually, I figured out that if I applied my way of doing business the field of dance representation, it could turn out to be a wonderful and lucrative venture for everyone involved. So far, the journey has been amazing and I am very grateful for the huge amount of support I have received from my peers and colleagues in the dance industry. I feel fortunate to have stayed in dance and been able to lead a new paradigm shift in dance representation. It's very exiting."

2. Your management company is called "The Movement"? Why?
"It's a 'double entendre' really. If you look at the definition of the word movement, it's easier to understand why I named it that. It implies 'to move', obviously and therefor reminds one of 'dance' so that's a reason in itself but, it also implies that a movement is a 'change in position or way of thinking'. It's also defined as 'a series of organized activities working toward a common purpose, goal or objective' or 'a group of people with a common ideology'. Since the whole goal and design of the company is to reshape dance representation and enter into the mix the concept of 'dance management' the word 'movement' seemed to fit the essence of the companies mission. The company plans to cause a literal movement in the way dance talent is represented. "

3. Were you ever a professional dancer?
"Yes, I was. I was born and raised in LA and danced here for many years."

4. When did you join Creating Opportunities workshop with Chonique & Lisette?

"Their my clients and I have been helping them put the word out for some time. When they decided to do the LA Master Class I asked them if I could come speak. I have been giving seminars on dance representation in LA and though the country for quite sometime and always enjoy helping young dancers with there questions about the industry. I haven't necessarily joined the seminar but was a guest speaker, rather, at the LA Master Class. It was truly amazing and inspiring. I learned something and thought I new it all! These ladies are so good at what they do. It's amazing. Every dancer should take either classes from them or attend one of their seminars. Their truly life changing."

5. What advice would you give to dancers who are still hustling to make it in this industry?
"Hang in there. It will take you at last 5 years to really get a rhythm going. Just try and get seen as much as possible. Weather that's in performances, in class or at auditions. Half of it is just showing up! Show up! Be on time and be nice. Look people in the eye when you talk to them and THANK THEM. If you get cut from and audition, don't leave. Stay and watch the dancers that get kept. You'll want to be that person someday so STUDY THEM. Also, get that there are things other than your ABILITY as a dancer that will determine weather or not you get kept at an audition. Your LOOK, RELATIONSHIPS and PERFORMANCE QUALITY will be major deciding factors. Take responsibility and don't blame the game, just learn how to play it YOUR WAY. Stay away from dancer gossip! Offer to do performances or assist a choreographer you like. Become versatile! Get good pictures that show you in at least 3 different looks and update your resumes frequently. Communicate with your agents! Take a COMMERCIAL WORKSHOP! Remember that you chose a career that is 99% rejection, prepare to deal with that mentally
and financially. SAVE YOUR MONEY! If you truly love dance, nothing will get in your way. Stay strong and stay positive and most of all HAVE FUN."

August Highlights

Andye J. Presents "Unveiled"
@ Club Aura
August 27th, 2010
Studio City, CA

The 2nd "Unveiled" showcase ran unbelievably smooth. It was short, sweet, but still entertaining. After taking a break, Kenya Clay & Spark, creators of C.R.E.A.M. (Collectively Remaining Entertaining and Motivated!) worked it out on stage; Johnathon "J. Boog" Rabon, a Britney Spears dancer, was asked to also express his talent for rap in addition to his dance skills; Pointblank LA put on a great freestyle fashion show; Eric Carlson, an Asian artist, sang Musiq Soulchild's "Just Friends" beautifully; Lashaun Price's group, Lucky Kandi, performed. The two Q's (Q. Burdette & Quinetta Wilmington) ethusiatically described the group as "Kill Bill meets Willy Wonka". Lashaun knows how to entertain. His choreography was on point and using dancers like Mimi Saruwatari was the icing on the luscious "Lucky Kandi" cake. I really enjoy Andye's "Unveiled" nights because they are so chill and laid back.

clearClear Talent Showcase
@ The Music Box
August 18th, 2010
Hollywood, CA

**Check out what TIV writer, Isaiah Spence, with MSA Talent, had to say about The Clear show....
"The Clear Showcase was phenomenal. It was at Music Box and it was very exclusive. You either had to be with clear or go with someone who was with Clear. It wasn't even a show, it was a mixer. A breaker opened the show. I'm not usually a fan of Breaking, but it was a extra ordinary opening by Ricardo Rodriguez aka "Frantick".Then Othane went up and danced an all girls piece to "Pay Me" by Usher & Miguel. Othane really captured the essence of femininity with no "snaps" included. She did a really good job at bringing back old femininity and sexuality. Donyelle performed her "Window Doppler" piece. Everyone was in there: Sienna,  Lauren, Miguel Antonio, Angel, Casa. It was different. It was a contemporary feel with a hip hop twist. It was ridiculous. Kimberly Cole, Trica Miranda's artist, performed "Smack You" and Psycho" and it was brilliant. They danced with whips and chairs, and the choreography was very sharp and intricate. All in all, I had a great experience with friends from Clear."

Since America's Best Dance Crew (ABDC) Season 2, Fannypak has reached great heights, including a sneaker line, commercials, music videos, television and now their own album on Itunes called "A Touch of Fanny". The album release party was a blast, and everyone came out to support the popular crew. Even Jon Chu, director of Step Up 3D and The LXD, made an appearance. The house was packed, and the performances were great. Cheryl Koo, with The Other Duck, showed off her fashion line; Chonique Sneed showcased her skills as a rappper/singer by performing a track from her album; Teresa Espinosa, from The Beatfreaks, joined in on an all-star ABDC cast reunion piece; and of course, we were privileged to see Matt Cady's choreography on stage throughout the night. lindsay"On Wednesday, August 4, 2010, Chonique and Lisette held their much-anticipated "Creating Opportunities" workshop, offering dancers from all over the world insight and feedback on the oftentimes scary world we call the dance industry! The night was filled not only with amazing tips and information from the two lovely ladies, but with several exercises and different occasions to share, forcing the dancers to take a look at who they are, where they are and where they want to go in their careers, and ultimately, "how to make magic happen"! Levi Walker added input about the importance of headshots; Jim Keith educated the room on the harsh reality of "the biz"; and Leslie Scott testified about her love for Chonique and Lisette's latest dual project: The Creating Opportunities Elite Team program! Let's just say that the evening was a success and that the message was clear: Each of us has the power to create the career of our dreams!"
