Greetings!

We are making good progress in Ken Reid Conservation Area toward creating Howler's Corners, the first off-leash dog park in the Lindsay area. This facility will ensure that people have a place where their dogs can run free while other sensitive natural features in the conservation area can be protected.

Although we hoped to be further along by now, we are about half way to our fundraising goal. The chosen site has presented some challenges including the need for greater site preparation than expected. Kawartha Conservation staff and Friends volunteers have been working hard to clear out brush and stumps, and establish the site boundary and trails.

A big thank you goes out to all of our individual and business donors so far. In particular, we want to recognize generous donations from the following local businesses: Giant Tiger, Kawartha Lakes Honda, Omemee Veterinary Hospital, Ruff Cuts, Three Island Vet Services, as well as the Kawartha Conservation Board of Directors. An extra special thanks goes to Arboristic Tree Care Services and Hoek Van Holland Landscaping for very generous donations of work and equipment.

We look forward to acknowledging everyone's contributions at Howler's Corners when the site is complete. Sponsorship opportunities are available for specific features such as benches, a section of fence or the dog calming area. Please see our plans for a sign to recognize your contributions. Please join us for two upcoming events!

The first is a guided hike at Ken Reid Conservation Area on Saturday, October 29 at 11 a.m., starting at the parking lot across the road from the Administrative Centre. The hike will be led by Rob Stavinga, Kawartha Conservation Watershed Technician, who is very knowledgeable about local ecology and wildlife. Bring your dog! Donations to the dog park will be gratefully accepted.

On November 5, the Friends will team up again with the John Howard Society for a litter pick-up on our adopted roads. This includes Angeline Street from the hospital up to Kenrei Road, and also Kenrei Road from the entry at Ken Reid Conservation Area to highway 35. We will gather at the parking area at 10 a.m. in Elgin Park, just off Angeline Street North, which is just north of Elgin Street. Click here to see a map. Work gloves and pizza lunch will be provided provided. Be sure to wear warm clothes. We'll be out until about 2 p.m.

Please remember to take out a Friends membership or renew for 2012.

Yours truly,

Kathleen Cooper
