Draft planning and regulation policies available for review and comment until Oct. 9

We are updating our watershed planning and regulation policies to align with the Development, Interference with Wetlands, and Alterations to Shorelines and Watercourses regulation (O. Reg. 182/06) and changes
in provincial legislation and land use planning policies, such as the Oak Ridges Moraine Act/Plan, Greenbelt Act, and municipal Official Plans.

The policies are part of the draft Watershed Plan Review and Regulation Policies Manual. Click here to download and comment on the Manual.

We regulate development in natural hazard and flood plain areas, such as shorelines. We also provide input to watershed municipalities on land use policies and development applications.

The updated policies will help us provide the best service possible to our watershed municipalities and residents by describing our roles and responsibilities regarding development and planning.

Kawartha Conservation has a mandate to protect people and their property against natural hazards, and regulate activities that could impact floodplains, shorelines, wetlands, watercourses, and unstable slopes and soils. (See more about our planning and regulations services). The policies help us meet these objectives by providing an evaluation, assessment and decision-making tool for reviewing and providing advice to watershed municipalities on land use policies and development applications, and for issuing permits under the Conservation Authorities Act (section 28), Ontario Regulation 182/06.

Learn about shoreline protection at planting events on Sturgeon Lake

Volunteers will be involved with planting native grasses to create shoreline buffers. These buffers will help prevent shoreline erosion, protect water quality by using nutrients b
efore they enter the water, and deter Canada Geese in municipal parks, while contributing to the health of tPhoto: Shoreline planting eventhe Scugog River and Sturgeon Lake. This event is part of the 'early actions' taking place under the Sturgeon Lake Management Plan, supported by the City of Kawartha Lakes.

By participating, you will have an opportunity to learn about different types of native plants that are suitable for shorelines on the Scugog River and around Sturgeon Lake, planting techniques, and shoreline buffer design. You will also have a chance to win native plants for your own property.
