Busy time for flood forecasting and warning program

Over the past 30 days, we have issued several flood forecasting and warning messages, including a flood advisory on March 4.

Snow survey, March 1, 2011

Hydrologist Iryna Shulyarenko measures the amount of snow on the ground, March 1. This information is used to estimate how much water from the snowpack will enter rivers and lakes when it melts.

These
messages are sent to municipal emergency coordinators and watershed communities to alert them to high water situations as they are developing.

The advisory was issued because of
warmer temperatures, rain, snow melt and frozen ground conditions producing significant water runoff. This resulted in high water levels and flows in local rivers and creeks, and some ice break-up.

Fortunately, we did not need to issue a flood warning, the next warning level, as major flooding was not expected.

With the snow and ice continuing to melt, the conditions are still very dangerous. Please keep children and pets well back from all watercourses, as well as water structures such as bridges, culverts and dams. Riverbanks and remaining ice cover are extremely unsafe.

See more about flood forecasting and warning.
