Support needed for dog park in Ken Reid Conservation Area
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In partnership with the John Howard Society of Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton, we are planning to develop a 3-acre, off-leash dog park in Ken Reid Conservation Area, which we hope to complete by mid-2011.
This will be the first public space near Lindsay where you can let your dog run free. Dogs are allowed in the conservation area, but are currently required by law to be on a leash to help protect sensitive natural features, wildlife and the safety of other visitors. Dogs must also be leashed in other public spaces throughout the City of Kawartha Lakes.
Plans for the park involve the installation of fencing around an unused area located near the main parking lot across from the Kawartha Conservation Administrative Centre. This will include a calming area for when excited dogs first arrive, a separate area, if needed, for older dogs or to protect smaller dogs or puppies.
We are also investigating the feasibility of pet waste composters and will be seeking corporate sponsors from the community.
Our main focus this winter is fundraising. Alongside help from volunteers, we anticipate costs of about $9,000, and would like to raise that amount through donations and sponsorships before we begin construction later in the spring.
Donations are welcomed, and can be made online at www.kawarthaconservation.com/friends or by cheque at the Kawartha Conservation Administrative Centre in Ken Reid Conservation Area, where memberships can also be obtained. Charitable tax receipts will be issued for all donations and memberships.
Anyone interested in getting involved is encouraged to attend the Friends annual general meeting on April 6th or contact Kawartha Conservation at 705.328.2271 ext. 220 or communications@kawarthaconservation.com.
Comments regarding the proposal can also be provided to Kawartha Conservation until January 18, 2011. |
