If you can make a QuickTime movie, you can make a film. As part of an
inspiring week long residency supported by the New England Foundation for the
Arts "Meet the Composer" program, Blanchette will provide beginner
and intermediate filmmakers and musicians the singular opportunity to
experience the craft of composing and editing music to enhance the emotional
life of film.
Blanchette,
"Writing music for film demands a degree of flexibility that musicians
rarely have. The craft of film scoring is about maximizing the scene's
expressiveness, often with a minimal amount of music. Composers, in service to
the director, need to make a series of choices whether music in a given scene
will contrast the story's mood or illustrate action with rhythms, sometimes
revealing the secret motives of characters."
The master
classes are offered at two levels: Participants and Auditors. Under the
guidance of Blanchette, Participants will create an effective scoring plan of
either a film cue of their choice, or one provided by Blanchette, much as
professional directors do with film score composers. Participants will employ
practical film scoring tools ranging from improvisation to computer-based cue
mapping techniques to create a complete, rough cue for the short scene
The Participants' work will be visible via audio
projection, allowing class Auditors to serve as an interactive audience; to ask
questions, make comments and participate in discussions. Discussion will
include of scoring techniques as learned from Blanchette's experience working
with Pulitzer-prize winning composer William Bolcom and director John Turturro,
with examples from various films, and demonstrations of cue choices from Blanchette's
scoring of Buster Keaton's Steamboat Bill, Jr.
