Just Buffalo is pleased to announce the third annual member's writing contest and reading. The contest alternates annually between poetry and fiction. This year will feature poetry and will be judged by poet Ansie Baird, whose book, In Advance of All Parting, was recently published by White Pine Press.
Winners will be announced at a special member's reading at The Western New York Book Arts Center on Thursday, February 24, 2011 at 7:30 PM. Two awards will be presented: a Judge's award, chosen by Ms. Baird, and an audience award, to be voted on by the audience present at the event.
Audience Award and Judge's Award winners will each receive a $50 cash prize, a gift certificate from Talking Leaves Books, publication in Artvoice and a certificate of recognition from Just Buffalo.
The contest is open to writers of poetry who are Just Buffalo Literary Center members in good standing at the time of submission. Contestants may join Just Buffalo at the time of submission by visiting the Just Buffalo Website or by sending a check for $35 along with their hard copy entry. The deadline for the Just Buffalo Member's Writing Contest is Friday, January 28, 2011.
Contest guidelines are as follows:
1. Submit one poem on any subject and in any form that is no longer than three (3) double-spaced typed pages. Pieces that exceed the page limit will be rejected out of hand with no refund of membership costs.
2. Include a separate cover page that includes name, address, telephone and email. DO NOT PUT YOUR NAME ON THE POEM ITSELF. Judging is blind. Only one poem per entrant please.
3. ELECTRONIC SUBMISSIONS GREATLY PREFERRED. Submit by email to: submissions@justbuffalo.org. If you insist on sending hard copy, please send by mail to MEMBER POETRY CONTEST, c/o Just Buffalo Literary Center, 617 Main St. , Suite 202A, Buffalo, NY 14203.
4. Submissions will not be returned. Submissions by non-members or lapsed members will be rejected unless annual membership ($35) is paid in full before contest deadline. If you are unsure of your membership status, write us at info@justbuffalo.org to find out.
5. DEADLINE: Friday, January 28, 2011.

We introduce him with his first novel to be published in the U.S., The Storyteller of Marrakesh. This book is the first in a cycle of novels set in the Muslim world motivated by the author's sense of responsibility as a writer to serve as a steward for the cultural richness of the Islamic world at a time it is often being misrepresented in the West. Author Roy-Bhattacharya was born in Jamshedpur, India, and currently lives in New York. |
