Lucille Clifton (1936-2010)
Just Buffalo lost a great friend and Buffalo one of its brightest literary lights with the passing of Lucille Clifton last week. Clifton, along with fellow Buffalonian Ishmael Reed, formed the core of a generation of African American writers from Buffalo who helped shape the literary landscape of the nation in the latter half of the 20th Century.
Just as importantly, she gave generously of her time and talent to Just Buffalo Literary Center and to the Buffalo literary community she came from. In 2001, at a critical moment in Just Buffalo's history, Lucille headlined a fundraiser that drew more than 400 people to the Theater of Youth in Allentown.
Most recently, she headlined the annual Buffalo/Williamsville, Poetry, Music and Dance Celebration, at which she performed her own work and collaborated with student composers and musicians who created their own works based on her poetry.
Thankfully, her generous spirit lives on in her poems.
