Literary Buffalo
SAD NEWS FROM AUSTIN, TEXAS

Just Buffalo mourns the passing of our friend, Gabrielle Bouliane, who died in Austin over the weekend, from cancer. Gabrielle arrived in town from Seattle about 5 years ago and approached Just Buffalo about organizing a poetry slam. She said she would run the whole show, and that all she wanted from us was help finding a venue and maybe some funding to cover the cost of visiting writers. Her tenacity and spirit quickly created the premier slam series in the region, The Nickel City Poetry Slam. For three years, she brought the best slam artists in the country to The Albright-Knox Art Gallery once a month to put on a show, while also developing the best of our local talent through the slam competition. She twice organized, coached and delivered a Buffalo team to the national poetry slam.

It's people like Gabrielle, whose selfless dedication to poetry above and beyond the attention they want to draw to their own work, that make Buffalo the great poetry center it is.

I wish there were more like her. She will be missed.
