This is an exciting week at the Maneuver Center of Excellence and Fort Benning as we host the first International Paralympic Committee 2011 World Cup USA.

What an amazing honor it is for us to welcome the 200 athletes and officials representing 27 nations here for this world class competition.

During this week, these outstanding competitors will try to outdo one another in 12 events, using both rifle and pistol, as they seek to qualify for the Paralympic Games in London in 2012.

Having world class events like the IPC Paralympic World Cup is one of many examples of the high-caliber activities that happen at Fort Benning; in addition to the world class training and leader development we do 365-days a year. This week's competition is much more than a shooting event, though.

Fort Benning is a talent magnet for leaders - as evident by the talented American heroes who have trained here and the world-class athletes who come to compete here.

As with all competition, I hope this week affords a meaningful experience - one filled with excellence, friendship, respect and pride as we continue to build on the rich history and tradition of the Spirit of Fort Benning.

One Force, One Fight!

International Sniper Competition wraps up
By Vince Little

The world's top sniper duo hails from Fort Bragg, N.C.
A competitor fires on a target downrange Thursday during the 2011 International Sniper Competition at Fort Benning. This year's field included entries from Ireland, Spain, Canada, Germany, the Air Force, Marine Corps and Army National Guard. There were state police tandems from Florida and California.

Master Sgt. Kevin Owens and Sgt. 1st Class Terry Gower of B Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne), emerged from a field of 32 teams to capture the top spot in the 2011 International Sniper Competition. Fort Bragg wound up placing three teams in the top five at the 11th annual event, which began here Sept. 27 and wrapped up Friday.

The field included entries from Ireland, Spain, Canada, Germany, the Air Force, Marine Corps and Army National Guard. There were state police tandems from Florida and California.

"It gets more competitive every year," said Sgt. 1st Class Richard Vest, a U.S. Army Sniper School instructor and team sergeant. "As the technology grows, everyone seems to get better ... This also gives us a chance to share ideas and spread our knowledge a little, even with other countries."

A wide range of skills was tested as competitors fired rifles at fixed and moving targets, from various distances and positions, both day and night. Instructors said most events required sharp communication between shooter and spotter. Factors such as elevation, weather conditions and wind must be accounted for.

Doughboys start off on right foot with 33-13 win

Doughboys start off on right foot with 33-13 win
Demetrius Carter grabs the first Doughboys touchdown of the season, nabbing a 5-yard fade from Powers.

FORT BENNING Ga. - Tailgaters flocked to the parking lots, the smoke and roar of simulated tank fire filled the air, and the Silver Wings landed at midfield to kick off the opening ceremony of the resurgence of Soldiers on the gridiron battlefield. Yep, football was played once again Sunday at Doughboy Stadium.

The Fort Benning Doughboys started their five-game season with a 33-13 win over the LaGrange College Panthers junior varsity squad.

Running back Emmanuel Batson led the way for the Doughboys with 124 rushing yards while quarterback Blake Powers, went 15--of-30 in passing with three touchdowns.

After missing his first three pass attempts, Powers found tight end Mario Jackson wide open in the flat for a 25-yard gain down to the Panthers' 14-yard line. Four plays later, Powers hit receiver Demetrius Carter in the corner of the end zone for a 5-yard touchdown.

With 5:28 remaining in the second quarter, Powers completed a pass to Jesse Lawson on a similar route for an 8-yard score. With a 16-0 lead, the Doughboys looked as if they would run away with the game; however, LaGrange responded on its next drive as Knox Robinson found receiver John Veal wide open for a 33-yard touchdown to cut the lead to 16-7 at halftime.

National Infantry Museum will display Cavalry and Armor History

by Borden Black

National Infantry Museum

The U.S. Army is providing funding for a gallery within the National Infantry Museum to house an exhibit of history of the Cavalry and Armor, according to Frank Hanner, Infantry Museum Director. That gallery, one of the two at the NIM that is currently empty, will allow the Armor to tell the history of its service until its own museum can be built.

Some of the Armor's smaller artifacts, perhaps a WWI Liberty Tank and a mounted horseman are being considered for inclusion in the memorabilia.

The Armor Gallery will meet or exceed the standards of the rest of the museum. Phillip Linn, treasurer of the Armor and Cavalry Heritage Foundation, says his foundation has agreed to "conform to the design characteristics of other galleries, which means first-class."

The exhibit is expected to open within a year of the work beginning.

More than 250 Cavalry and Armor macro-artifacts, like tanks, and thousands of smaller artifacts are now at Fort Benning waiting for a climate controlled facility to be constructed to house them. Although a site for a future Armor Museum, just past the National Infantry Museum, has been marked with a sign, Linn says fund raising challenges could push groundbreaking to 2015 or 2016.

Ben Williams, National Infantry Museum Executive Director, is glad the NIM can help the Armor. "It's very important to the overall mission of educating the public about the sacrifices made by both branches," he explains.

A few armored Infantry exhibits outside the Infantry museum, including a personnel carrier from WWII, are also in the works. They will be displayed alongside the walkway to the parade field. A Fort Benning 1919 vintage narrow gauge railroad engine and observation car from a later era will also be on display.
