Every year, the first Monday in September is set aside to celebrate the contributions America's workers have made to the strength, prosperity and well-being of the nation. As Labor Day approaches, our team at Fort Benning is working hard to train Soldiers and prepare them for the future. We also are focusing on the future and the significant role the Maneuver Center of Excellence plays in the reshaping of the Army training, doctrine and requirements for the Maneuver Force.

This is an exciting time to be at Fort Benning. Some of the initiatives we are working on include 21st Century Maneuver Training, the importance of the Squad as a Strategic Formation, and enhancing Soldier, Family and Civilian resiliency through Comprehensive Soldier Fitness.

As we close out the summer and look toward the fall, mark your calendars for some important Maneuver Center of Excellence and Fort Benning activities including the Maneuver Conference at the Columbus Georgia Convention and Trade Center Sept. 12, a visit from Coach Mike Krzyzewski, head coach of the Duke Blue Devils and TEAM USA Sept. 22, and the dedication and naming of the MCoE Headquarters (Building 4) and BRAC to the Future celebration Sept. 23.

That is just a snapshot of all that is planned for the fall as Fort Benning is the place to be - a place where leaders are born and excellence is the norm. These events also are just one more reason I hope you have an enjoyable and safe Labor Day weekend. I thank each of you for all you do, making Fort Benning the best Army installation in the world.

Commanding General's Labor Day Safety Message

Major General BrownLabor Day officially marks the end of the summer while recognizing the hard work and economic achievements of American workers. It is a tribute to the strength, prosperity and well-being of our country, even in difficult budget times. During the extended weekend, I know many of you will enjoy water activities, outdoor events or travel. This is a great opportunity to take a well deserved break and recharge before the fall season gets into full swing.

Unfortunately, Labor Day weekend also is historically associated with an increase in accidents and incidents. I encourage you to enjoy this weekend while being mindful of everyone's safety.

Safety awareness, risk management and accident prevention begins with each and every Soldier, Family member, and Civilian. Though we cannot totally eliminate accidents from occurring, we can minimize their effects and reduce the severity should an accident occur. While enjoying this opportunity to relax, ensure safety awareness is an integral part of your off-duty activities. Our goal at Fort Benning is to be accident free. To achieve this goal, to need all Commanders and Directors to issue pre-holiday safety briefings, in addition to a risk management mind set being forefront for every member of the Maneuver Center of Excellence and Fort Benning Family.

Please keep these tips in mind when planning for the extended Labor Day weekend:

  • Never drink and operate vehicles, watercraft, or motorcycles. If drinking alcohol, plan ahead for a designated driver (taxi, friend, or family member) to provide transportation to and from the activities.
  • If participating in water activities: Never swim alone, swim in approved areas only, supervise children engaged in water activities, and always wear personal flotation devices when operating watercraft.
  • If traveling outside the Fort Benning and Chattahoochee Valley area, fill out a Travel Risk Planning System (TriPS) report form that can be found online at (https://safety.army.mil).
  • Beware of the dangers associated with overexposure to the sun and high temperatures. Everyone should drink plenty of water and limit their activities during periods of extreme heat and high humidity.
  • Motorcycle safety is a must. Motorcyclists are required to wear all personal protective equipment. Motorcyclists should never attempt risky maneuvers or operate a motorcycle above the posted speed limit.
  • Arrive Alive! When driving, everyone in the vehicle should always wear a seat belt. Children should always be properly restrained in an approved car safety scat or with a booster seat or a scat be lt. There is no excuse.

The Maneuver Center of Excellence and Fort Benning leadership is committed to teamwork, discipline, and protecting our greatest assets - our Soldiers, Family members, and Civilians. We cannot do it alone. Let's work together to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable Labor Day weekend.

Former Delta Force commander's lecture part of National Infantry Museum's observation of 9/11

by Borden Black

Lieutenant General William G. "Jerry" Boykin (retired) a founding member of the Delta Force will kick off the National Infantry Museum's 9/11 commemoration with a lecture on Wednesday, September 7 at 7:00 pm.

LTG Boykin served in the unit for more than a decade participating in almost every high-profile counter-terrorism operation during that period, including the Iran hostage crisis. He was later chosen as the commanding officer for the Delta Force and eventually selected to lead the Army's Special Forces Command.

During his military career, he has won multiple awards and decorations, including the Distinguished Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. In 2001, he was chronicled in the Ridley Scott movie "Black Hawk Down."

Boykin retired from the Army in 2007 as Deputy Under Secretary of Defense Intelligence and is now a sought-after military commentator who has appeared on CNN, FOX News and MSNBC. He also teaches courses on ethics and national security at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia.

In 2008, Boykin wrote his autobiography, "Never Surrender: A Soldier's Journey to The Crossroads of Faith and Freedom." The book provides an insight into military tactics and life behind the scenes of the Delta Force.

Events planned for Sunday, September 11 at the museum include: display of a steel beam pulled from the rubble of the World Trade Center, dedication of a "Field of Flags," a Red Cross "Badges for Life" Blood Drive, search-and-rescue dog demonstrations, teamwork exercises, scavenger hunt and crafts for kids. Local singers and musicians will provide patriotic music throughout the day.
