From the Top
Now is a very exciting time to serve at Fort Benning, the Army's premier installation. The Maneuver Center of Excellence has the lead for development of effective training for success in future operations by our Army's maneuver forces. Central to this effort is bringing "overmatch" to the tip of the spear - the nine-man dismounted squad. "Overmatch" is defined as "generating and applying power similar to that of the enemy's power at a level and in a manner he cannot match." It's central to the way the U.S. military has fought and won at all levels, except for the smallest maneuver element, the squad, where there is no significant overmatch capability to the current threat. That has to change. Therefore, we now put a huge strategic-level emphasis on the Squad as a Strategic Formation (SaaSF). That means, spending more at the tactical small unit level and focusing on the squad as a "nine-as-one" team. Our goal is to enable mounted and dismounted Soldiers to be linked more effectively, and to share better situational awareness and a common operating picture when they are on the ground, separated from the vehicle.
To achieve this goal, we are working In partnership with other Centers of Excellence and Department of Defense partners, to take a new approach - by looking at the force from the bottom up - to the squad modernization effort. To identify future squad requirements in a complex operating environment, we are now evaluating every facet to include doctrine, organization, training, materiel, and perhaps, most important, leader development. Our efforts at the Maneuver Center will shape and influence future defining moments in Army history. Elevating the tactical small unit and treating it as a strategic system is a major priority for the Army. Through the SaaSF initiative, we now put greater emphasis on providing the capabilities, training and leader development needed to enable the squad to meet current and future battlefield demands. Now is a very exciting time to serve at Fort Benning, the Army's premier installation. One Force, One Fight! Maj. Gen. John Brown Commanding General |

Story by Ben Wright, Ledger Enquirer
Surrounded by Viet Cong using Russian tanks, Paul R. Longgrear could have surrendered, but that wasn't a choice for an Army Ranger.
Longgrear of Pine Mountain, Ga., led the breakout in the battle of Lang Vei in 1968 and personally destroyed a machine gun nest to escape. During the 15-hour battle, he also destroyed two tanks and led his unit in destroying nine other tanks and enemy forces.
Longgrear, 68, a retired colonel, was one of 12 Rangers inducted into the Ranger Hall of Fame Wednesday during a ceremony at Legacy Hall of the RiverCenter for the Performing Arts. Since 1992, the Ranger Hall of Fame has honored and preserved the spirit and contributions of America's elite soldiers.

BAGRAM, Afghanistan, June 26, 2011 -- Few people can claim with certainty that they hold the balance of life and death in their hands, but Task Force Falcon's Company C "Mountain Dustoff" not only claims it, they save lives on a daily basis.
Company C, 3rd Battalion, 10th Aviation Regiment, Task Force Falcon, is a medical evacuation unit, performing patient transfers from one base to another and picking up patients from the point of injury, which in this case usually means the battlefield.

Governor, VIPs visit National Infantry Museum
Story by Borden Black
Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal paid his first visit to the National Infantry Museum last week and left encouraging all Georgians to see it for themselves. Executive Vice President COL (Ret.) Greg Camp conducted the tour for Gov. Deal, MCOE Commander MG Robert Brown, Rep. Richard Smith, Columbus Mayor Teresa Tomlinson, Chamber of Commerce President Mike Gaymon and LTG (Ret) Carmen Cavezza.
After visiting the Last 100 Yards, Fort Benning Gallery and Cold War Gallery, Camp says the Governor told him it was even better than he imagined and he plans to return with his children and grandchildren. Gov. Deal, who served in the Armed Forces, shared some stories with the group and Mayor Tomlinson says the governor was obviously moved by the exhibits.
Although MG Brown has visited the museum several times since he took command, it was his first formal tour. "At one point he said 'I'm going to re-up,' Camp recalls.
Tours for groups from 20 -150 people can be arranged by calling 706-685-5814.
