Keeping Soldiers, their families and our civilians healthy in mind, body and spirit is a priority at Fort Benning. We believe that Comprehensive Soldier Fitness is a key to this effort.

In January, we formed a Community Health Promotion Council and already have a Resiliency Goals handbook, an online resource guide and a virtual resiliency campus on Fort Benning's website. Brigade Health Promotion Teams are forming and installation organizations are working hand-in-hand to ensure the programs and services we offer meet the needs of our Soldiers, families and civilians and promote total fitness.  Comprehensive Soldier Fitness is here to stay.

I encourage you to check out the website, ask about it in your unit and get smart on this holistic and innovative approach to increasing Army readiness. This is about adding resources to your toolbox that can help you grow and thrive during this very demanding period of our Army.

VANPOOL + YOU = MONEY SAVED

ATTENTION FORT BENNING COMMUTERS: Gas prices are rising every day, but you can do something about it RIGHT now. Did you know that you can join a vanpool (or start your own) and actually get paid to drive to work? Fort Benning's Garrison Command is trying to spread the news about this program to help our Soldiers, Families and Civilians.

Get Started

It takes just three easy steps to start saving money on your work commute.

Step 1

Fort Benning is working in partnership with the Clean Air Campaign to reduce air pollutants. The first step is the commuting survey, which will determine commuting trends on Fort Benning and help determine the pounds of pollution that are being eliminated when vanpools and carpools are formed.

Tornado, lightning delay competition

tornado

A tornado touched down about a mile away from the Ranger Training Brigade compound in Harmony Church early Saturday morning, which forced organizers to delay the start of the night orienteering course at the David E. Grange Jr. Best Ranger Competition.

The inclement weather and lightning yielded unintended consequences for competitors in the form of extra rest they ordinarily wouldn't have received.

Former CSA Casey to award Distinguished Service Cross

Gen. Casey Former Army Chief of Staff, Gen. George W. Casey will present the Distinguished Service Cross to retired Capt. Jay Copley for his actions while serving with the 1st Battalion, 50th Infantry Regiment during the battle of An Bao, Vietnam on May 5, 1968. Casey will present the award April 28 at 2 p.m. at the National Infantry Museum.

As a company commander, Copley led an assault on a numerically-superior enemy force that threatened to overrun an adjacent unit.  Despite being severely wounded in the fierce battle that followed, Copley's fearless leadership resulted in a rout of the enemy forces.

Copley is the honorary sergeant major of Fort Benning's 1st Battalion, 50th Infantry Regiment --- now part of the 198th Infantry Brigade.

Casey's father was Copley's commanding officer. The Distinguished Service Cross is the nation's second highest award for valor, second only to the Medal of Honor.  Copley was never awarded the DSC due to an administrative error and a U.S. Army three-year statute of limitation on awarding a Distinguished Service Cross.

It required an act of Congress for Copley to finally be recognized.

Georgia Congressman Lynn A. Westmoreland and Senator Saxby Chambliss included language in the Ike Skelton National Defense Authorization Act of

2011 to waive the statute of limitation for Copley.

Soldiers, What does right look like?

ASU

Fort Benning's senior enlisted leader is calling on Soldiers to hit the books - specifically Army Regulation 670-1. The regulation governs the wear and appearance of all Army uniforms, from the physical fitness uniform to the new service uniform.

Soldiers need to take a second look at their uniforms and take the time to correct mistakes, said Command Sgt. Maj. Chris Hardy, the post's command sergeant major.

Misplaced and faded badges give the appearance of a sloppy Soldier, he said. The most common mistakes Hardy said he's seen are with the Army Service Uniform. "There are a lot of interpretations," he said.

Residents: Beware of dryer fires

dryerfire

Officials have a message for post residents: Dryers could do more than simply take the dampness out of your clothes if they're not maintained properly.

Three small dryer fires, including one at Smith Fitness Center, have broken out at Fort Benning in the last few months, said Steven Lowell, the installation's assistant chief of fire prevention. All were directly tied to a buildup of lint in the exhaust tube and area surrounding the dryer itself.

Army to inactivate Accessions Command

freakley

WASHINGTON (Army News Service, April 20, 2011) -- U.S. Army Accessions Command will be inactivated as part of Defense and Army efficiency reviews, officials announced today.

The decision is a result of a comprehensive study to develop appropriate options for the alignment of commands that fulfill human resource functions, said Mark Davis, director of the Strategic Initiatives Group, Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Manpower and Reserve Affairs.

"This decision will lead to the streamlining of the Army's accessioning process and will produce economic savings by de-layering the command structure without increasing the risk to the Army," Davis said. In his memorandum to Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, Secretary of the Army John McHugh outlined five decisions:

-- Inactivating Army Accessions Command

-- Realigning Army Recruiting Command and Cadet Command under the Army Training and Doctrine Command

National Infantry Museum

'Camp Benning' event offered to public

2011 is the second full year for the National Infantry Museum's summer camp and many of last year's campers are returning for part two.

Held in the World War II Company Street buildings and in the National Infantry Museum, the camp teaches history through the soldier's mission and how he has lived and worked over the past 235 years. Campers, who range in age from 9 to 13, also receive instruction on how to be a leader and live up to the Army values.

Hands-on activities as well as history lessons are part of the daily events. During each of the five half-days of the camp, the children learn about a different war, even during lunch when they may have food from the period being studied.  To better understand the Civil War, for instance, the campers participate in a battle reenactment and have a sample of hardtack.

In addition to information and experiences, campers receive items to take home: work books to share the experience with their parents, a t-shirt and dog tags.

As education director Matt Young prepares for this year's camp he plans for more exciting lessons for the youngsters and hopes to give the second level students some contact with soldiers and training at Fort Benning.

This year there will be three sessions, two introductory sessions for entry level campers and a level 2 camp for those who attended last year.  Level one will run from June 20 to 24 and July 25 to 29. Level 2 starts on July 11 and runs through July 15. Sessions run from 9 am to1 pm for level 1 and a little longer for level 2.

Each level 1 session will have 40 campers with level 2 limited to 35 campers. The groups will be led by the education staff, docents, and volunteers.

Space is limited and those registering before May 1 will receive a discount so anyone interested in signing up should contact Matt Young at 706-653-9234.
