A  New Year and a new way of doing business when it comes to communicating with our Soldiers, families and civilians at Fort Benning - that's the goal in offering the first Facebook Fort Benning town hall meeting from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12.

This is an important first for Fort Benning. Town hall meetings are a great way to share information and have two-way conversations. With this Facebook town hall - we are going virtual with our efforts.

Our hope is that folks, who may have not been able to attend town hall meetings in the past, have a convenient way to participate in the dialogue. We thought FaceBook would be a great tool in taking these conversations virtual as statistics show more than 500 million people use FaceBook.

In fact, Fort Benning's FaceBook page has more than 47,000 fans. While it may be a new year, focusing on what is important to our Soldiers, families and civilians is not new to us. You have a dynamic and dedicated team working every day that cares about the quality of life on Fort Benning.

We hope you join the conversation Jan. 12 and let us know how we are doing and what you think of this new effort. We'll be at www.facebook.com/fortbenningfans

Santa drops in

Fort Benning celebrated the holiday season with the annual tower lighting Friday at Eubanks Field.

The event, hosted by the 1st Battalion (Airborne), 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment, included military police dog demonstrations, MCoE Band music and the 34-foot tower operations. Children and adults alike were able to glide across the 34-foot towers. The event culminated with Santa jumping from a tower and was followed by the lighting of the 250-foot tower.

Erika Jackson, an Army spouse, said it was her third time coming to Fort Benning. Jackson and her family attended previous tower lightings.

"One of the best memories we have," Jackson said, "was seeing Santa jump from the sky."

Jessica Strokeland, the military spouse of an Airborne instructor at the 1st Bn., 507th PIR, said it was her first time seeing the tower lighting.

Strokeland said she had looked forward to seeing Santa and watching the towers being lit. She also wanted her 2-year-old daughter to enjoy seeing Santa.

"She's terrified of Santa right now," Strokeland said, "but we keep trying."

National Infantry Museum celebrates the Gift of Freedom

It looks a lot like Christmas at the National Infantry Museum and Soldier Center, but ever conscious of the mission, the museum is honoring soldiers with its holiday tribute.

This year one of the two 15-foot tall trees celebrates the gift of freedom. It is adorned with red, white and blue balls and trimmed with American flags. Visitors are encouraged to place notes written to soldiers on the tree. The public can stop by a table and write a message of support. When the tree is removed after Christmas the notes will be sent to Infantry soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Santa will also be present at the museum. His visits will coincide with the showing of the "The Polar Express" in the IMAX Theater. In addition to Saint Nick, the kids will be able to visit the Polar Express's conductor who will punch their golden tickets.  Another Christmas classic, "A Christmas Carol" is also showing during the holidays. Show times are listed online at www.nationalinfantrymuseum.org.

The National Infantry Museum also provides inspiration for gift giving. There are gift certificates for the theater and rifle simulator and lots of ideas in the soldier store. A forever gift is a granite paver commemorating your loved one's service. Proceeds go to support operations of the National Infantry Museum as do your donations and membership in Friends of the Museum

Now and Then III: Community Photo Contest

Columbus, Georgia -  The Columbus Museum presents the Now and Then III Community photo contest. See our past. Share your pictures. This intersection of learning, seeing and creating lies at the heart of an exciting photography contest and exhibition now underway at the museum. The contest is free and open to the public.

Take a look at the historic photos online http://columbusmuseum.com/exhibitions/nowandthen/photocontest/  or at the Museum's Flickr page http://www.flickr.com/groups/columbusphotocontest/. Then head out to capture your present-day interpretation. All entries must reference one of these historic images in a manner that broadly addresses the theme of Columbus "now" and Columbus "then." Upload your images to the museum's Flickr page -- entries will be accepted through Jan. 31.

A panel of judges will select photographs uploaded to the museum's Flickr page based on creativity, composition and technical quality. Twenty works will be selected for exhibition in the Columbus Museum starting Mar. 19. The top three photographs will be announced during an opening reception Mar. 24.
