Major General Brown

Fall is here and it is a busy time at Fort Benning. Last weekend, hundreds participated in the inaugural Soldier Half and Full Marathon to benefit the National Infantry Museum, House of Heroes and Honor Flight. The afternoon was topped off with the Veterans Day parade in Columbus and Phenix City. What a pleasure it is to serve in a community that embraces and honors it veterans.

Topping off the Veterans Day remembrance activities, we are pleased to announce the relocation of the VA Soldier Service Center to Building 2751 - across from the Airborne School. A ribbon cutting to open the building, which was renovated to house these services, will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16.

This week also brings changes for the Garrison as Command Sgt. Maj. Mark Moore assumes the responsibility of Garrison Command Sergeant Major in a ceremony at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 19, in the Regimental Room of the Benning Conference Center. Current Garrison Command Sgt. Maj. James Foreman is retiring after serving his country honorably for more than 30 years. The command staff at the Maneuver Center of Excellence and the entire Fort Benning community wishes Command Sgt. Maj. Foreman the best as he begins his next journey in life and thank him for his dedicated service.

How did the term Transformation arise?

In the Army, it was first widely used by General Eric K. Shinseki when he was the Chief of Staff of the Army in 1999 as he grappled with moving the Army into the future. The term has many meanings and connotations and it's pretty liberally used.  In our context here at Fort Benning, it means fundamental change.  The change required to physically move a branch of the Army, to create new infrastructure, merge two distinct and proud cultures, and make it all work in short order.  We have to look at everything we do, our processes, how we communicate, how we lead, and transform everything holistically within that context.  That's tough to do.

For the Infantry and Armor, it's been a long time coming.  Our best military professional judgment has been calling for this for decades.  We've been fighting together for more than 60 years on every battlefield in Europe, across the Pacific, in Korea and Vietnam, in Somalia and Panama, the Middle East and now Afghanistan and Iraq - as a combined arms teams.  A combined arms team does everything together - lives, trains and fights together as a team. It's only fitting that we join that tradition here at Fort Benning and start at the beginning - together as a combined arms team.

Reluctant hero becomes first living MOH recipient since Vietnam

WASHINGTON (Army News Service, Nov. 15, 2010) - Don't call Staff Sgt. Salvatore "Sal" Giunta a hero.

Don't say that he went above the call of duty when he single-handedly stopped two terrorists from kidnapping his wounded buddy during a ferocious firefight in Afghanistan in 2007.

Because as Giunta sees it, he was just doing his job.

Taking a chance on Chance

Taking a chance on Chance

Three years ago, Staff Sgt. Chance Vaughn didn't know what direction his Army Ranger career would take him. The then 25-year-old squad leader was approaching his final year of service with multiple combat deployments under his belt and a wife at home. He had a decision to make: stay in or get out.

In October 2007, an insurgent with a .45-caliber pistol made it for him. As Vaughn and his squad breached a house in Mosul, Iraq, being investigated as a possible terrorist cell, an insurgent sprayed bullets across the room, shooting Vaughn twice. The first bullet struck his left arm, the second hit near his left eye, traveling the outer edge of his skull.
