South Lumpkin Road gate to close Nov. 1

Starting Nov. 1, Fort Benning will permanently close the Access Control Point 1 on South Lumpkin Road.  Closure is required to facilitate traffic flow through the access control point located on Fort Benning Boulevard and to provide manpower for the new Harmony Church ACP.

To reduce any negative impact on the community, the near-term solution is to divert traffic to and from South Lumpkin Road through the parking lot of the National Infantry Museum to Benning Road. A new road between South Lumpkin and Benning Road is already being planned, and if funding is approved, construction could begin as early as next year.

Dixie Road construction

Dixie Road construction will occur in four phases.  Phase 1 is already underway and includes timber harvesting at Wagner and Corson ranges, demolition of Ragin Court and installation of silt fencing near Sightseeing Road.  More updates will be posted as work progresses.

This week, CSM Hardy and I are at the 60th Association of the United States Army  Annual Meeting & Exposition in Washington, D.C.

This year's theme is America's Army: The Strength of the Nation. While we're here, we have the opportunity to tell everyone about all of the great work that is being done at Fort Benning to continue to keep the Army strong.

Among the success stories - AMU's SGT Sherri Gallagher, who bested 11 other competitors to earn the Soldier of the Year title for 2010.

And, on Thursday, we'll celebrate with the entire community at Soldier and Family Appreciation Day beginning at 3 p.m. at Doughboy Stadium.  Come out and watch the 3rd HBCT take on Columbus State as football returns to Doughboy!

For the first time since its inception nine years ago, a female Soldier has claimed the title of Soldier of the Year for 2010's Best Warrior Competition.

Sgt. Sherri Gallagher of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit, who represented U.S. Training and Doctrine Command at Best Warrior, beat out 11 other competitors from the Army's major commands. Gallagher, who is currently stationed at Fort Benning, Ga., is one of the top long-range rifle shooters in the country.

During an opening presentation at the 2010 Association of the United States Army's Annual Meeting and Exposition in Washington, D.C., Secretary of the Army John McHugh discussed the Army's challenge of operating in a constrained budget environment as well as efforts to modernize the Army.

Army leaders promised to leave family support programs intact when looking for ways to lean out the service's massive budget.

"We want to ensure that the family programs we're operating are run well and efficiently and if we need to make adjustments so they can be more so, that's fine," said Secretary of the Army John McHugh. "But what we won't do particularly as a first reaction, is look to those programs as a source of budgetary savings."
