South Lumpkin Road gate to close Nov. 1

Starting Nov. 1, Fort Benning will permanently close the Access Control Point 1 on South Lumpkin Road.  Closure is required to facilitate traffic flow through the access control point located on Fort Benning Boulevard and to provide manpower for the new Harmony Church ACP.

To reduce any negative impact on the community, the near-term solution is to divert traffic to and from South Lumpkin Road through the parking lot of the National Infantry Museum to Benning Road. A new road between South Lumpkin and Benning Road is already being planned, and if funding is approved, construction could begin as early as next year.

Here, at Fort Benning, we are in the job of training the world's best Soldiers and adaptive leaders - in fact we train more than 140,000 annually.

There is probably no one more important in these young, new Soldiers lives than a drill sergeant.

These drill sergeants have a vested interest in ensuring that when these Soldiers leave here they have had the best training possible, and are ready to face the challenges they will have ahead of them when they get to their first unit.

Recently, I had the opportunity to recognize some very important and selfless people who stand side-by-side with our drill sergeants - their spouses.

We know that when a Soldier volunteers or is assigned to walk the trail, the spouse also walks the trail -  a trail of strength and fortitude -  because that is what it takes to be the spouse of one of our drill sergeants.

 ·  They become the backbone on the home front.

 ·  They understand that although their spouse is not deployed downrange , because of their important role, they are "deployed" in a different sense.

 ·  They are the ones who must carry on the day-to-day family operations of work, school and childrens' activities as their spouses spend hours upon hours, days upon days preparing today's Soldier for tomorrow's battlefield.

For that we are thankful - I am thankful. At Fort Benning, we are a team, and our team includes not only our Soldiers in uniform, but also their spouses and family members. They are all vital to our Army Family and they are pivotal in molding tomorrow's Soldier.

God bless our Soldiers and you - their dedicated spouses.

U.S. Navy Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, addresses the audience at the USO of Illinois Star Spangled Salute in Chicago, Oct. 17, 2010.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 17, 2010 -- Americans must recognize the sacrifices and struggles of today's troops and their families and work harder to reintegrate them into their communities, the nation's top military officer said yesterday.

The past nine years of war and multiple combat deployments have stressed the force, leaving in their wake veterans and families who return home only to have to start putting their lives back together, Navy Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said at a USO Gala in Chicago.

"These years of battle have steeled them for an uncertain future, because when our men and women come home, the battle doesn't end," Mullen said. "Quite frankly, for many it's just the beginning."
