2010 BRC winners

More than 40 two-man Ranger teams from around the Army competed in the 27th annual David E. Grange Jr. Best Ranger Competition this weekend, but by Sunday evening only one earned the title of Best Ranger.

The competition began Friday with 17-miles of running and walking, 250 meters of swimming, an urban obstacle course, a helicopter spot jump and a 13-mile road march. Day
one also tested the Ranger teams' weapons knowledge and shooting skills.

By day two, only 26 teams remained and they were challenged with weapons assembly, throwing grenades, a stress shoot, ranger first responder, the Tri Tower challenge and two mystery events. At the end of the day all 26 teams were a go for the night orienteering, which typically ends the competition for another two or three teams.

The third and final day of competition found competitors navigating the almost mile-long Darby Queen obstacle course and jumping from helicopters during the helocast and swim. They also navigated a log walk, rope drop and suspension traverse as part of the water confidence course before paddling several miles down the Chattahoochee River in a canoe. Their final challenge of the competition was a three-mile run to Lawson Army Air Field.

Forty teams began the Best Ranger Competition on Friday and when it was all over, 25 teams had survived. But it was team six, Master Sgts. Eric Turk and Eric Ross, both of U.S. Special Operations Command, who took first place in the 2010 Best Ranger Competition.

Gates calls for significant cuts in defense overhead

Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates speaks to students at the Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., May 7, 2010. He told students differences between conventional and irregular warfare are becoming "less relevant in the real world."
SECDEF Gates
Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates used the occasion of the 65th Anniversary of the Victory in Europe to declare war on duplicative overhead, bloat and needless spending in the Defense Department.

In a speech at the Eisenhower Library here today, Gates called for a reduction in overhead for the department, and said he wants the department to take a hard, realistic look at what defense capabilities America really needs in the 21st century.

The Defense Department must take a hard look at every aspect of how it is organized, staffed and operated, Gates said in the speech.

Follow me turns 50
The Infantry's signature icon turned 50 on Monday, and the man behind the statue returned to Fort Benning for a "birthday" celebration.

MAJ(R) Eugene Wyles made the trip from his home in Louisiana to be the featured guest at a ceremony in the National Infantry Museum and Soldier Center at Patriot Park. In 1959, he posed for the original "Follow Me" statue while attending Officer Candidate School.

Basic trainees learn their way around
Similar to the game of hide and seek, basic trainees practiced finding the enemy before being found at Wilson Village urban operations site on Sand Hill Wednesday.

Soldiers were taught to act quickly, but unlike a game, the stakes are nothing to play with.

"Urban fighting is a very quick, intense, horrific type of fighting," said 1SG Randy Hahn, E Company, 2nd Battalion, 58th Infantry Regiment. "An insurgent can run from building to building, and you'll only see him for a few seconds. It's very fast, and it's very dangerous."

Post leaders are considering a change to the current curfew hours for teens younger than 16, but they want to know your thoughts before they do so.
The proposed change, which would require youngsters to be in their homes by 10 p.m. every night, is part of a bigger push to keep teens out of trouble, said Fort Benning Chief of Police Kevin Clarke.
Clarke said the number of juvenile offenses tends to rise with the temperature during the summer break from school. more
